I'm wanting to put together a very cheap build just to play around with using XP or a low requirment Linux OS. All I need is a motherboard and CPU, maybe RAM also. I would like to be able to practice some risky overclocks with it, so I don't have to risk my gaming PC and I can get better experience overclocking.
I was thinking of using socket 775 for this. I've never had any core 2 generation CPUs, but I've heard the core 2 duos are easy to overclock pretty high. On ebay I can find a 775 MB for around $20 or so and a CPU for around $10 or so. I'll probably go ahead and get some RAM, like a gig or 2 also.
What Mobos and CPUs were the best, or decent, at overclocking for the 775 generation? Or maybe should I go for a cheap AMD build? I'm sure I could get an AMD build for around the same. For around the same performance as the core 2 generation, what would be better, AMD or Intel for messing around with? My current gaming PC is AMD based so idk if that would matter other than the fact I've never tried overclocking Intel CPUs.
