I am in need of building a server. I want to spend as little as possible.

My preferences, are as follows.

- Plex Transcoding
- 5 Bays or More For Drives 3.5inch

Besides that, I am going to run unRAID and don't need suggestions on drives, no optical is needed, just cheap and works.

Thanks

bmancreations,

The most inexpensive way I can think of to buy a server is to find a previous generation model of good quality and in good condition. Perhaps this would suit your requirements >

> which is a Dell Poweredge 2850 with 2X 3.2GHz CPU's (I'm guessing dual core Xeon), 4GB RAM, 6X (10K RPM) 73GB drives, 700W PSU for $131. While I don't know about "Plex transcoding", I've seen posts that mention the 2850 and unRAID. These use DDR2 ECC RAM .

These Dell Poweredge are very good quality. a friend's office has a Poweredge 2650 that has been running continuously since about 2004- very reliable.

I don't have any special sense of this series, except the one in my friend's office and that I use a Dell Precision T5400 which is very, very similar to the Poweredge 2950 - the RAM has the same part number- and the T5400 is the most reliable and well built computer I've had. Some people buy older Precisions and use those as servers, but those have space for either 3X (T3X00) or 5X (T5X00, T7X00) 3.5" drives.

If you shop for Poweredge servers, they were made with different number of drive bays- look for a 6-bay version and check the Dell manual to check for the features that you need.

Cheers,
