Tried everything, 2 type of speakers, pin headphones/headsets and even an usb headset. It started one night, everything was fine, using the usual usb-headset and the day after, when I plugged in my usb-headset it said "device malfunctioned", something like that. From that moment, I had no sound. The pin headphones, work on the laptop but still not on this computer. Checked from device manager, I think it shows that a sound card is installed. I beg for a solution, cause it's driving me crazy, I can't play, can't watch movies, can't listen to ANYTHING. thanks in advance

Solution
Thank you.
Yes, to look at the PSU you have to go into the tower, but I think we can skip that for right now.
According to ASUS the sound chip on your motherboard is an "ADI AD1986A SondMAX 6 channel CODEC."
This part doesn't show up on your 'sound' screen shot. Two things possible:
1st. The part has died, the sound chipset is no longer functional. Very probable. This is an extremely old system (7 years or more) and may have finally worn out.
2nd, and this is a little better, the driver for the sound may have become corrupted. Below if the link to ASUS:
http://support.asus.com/download.aspx?SLanguage=en&p=1&m=P5VD2-VM&hashedid=2sYAtam7ng8vCngf
You will have to select an operating system, then download the newest audio drivers and...
In Windows 7, open the control panel, open sound, make certain your sound card or on-board sound chip (on mine it is Realtek High Definition Audio) is checkmarked and green. Make sure none of the digital stuff is checked. You can right click on your speakers and configure them, but I would wait to see if you have any sound at all. Plug in your headphones or turn on your speakers, click on the tab "Sounds", in the 'program events' window pick a sound with a speaker by it and click it; it should show up at the bottom and click the test button. If you get sound then the sound card/chip is working.
I have had driver updates and windows updates kill off my sound on more then a few occasions.
Hope this helps.

http://gyazo.com/a2dddf9030aa7491693eb5a265b446d4 , still no sound tough

One last possibility that I know of.
Go back into the 'sound', playback; right click on your speakers, select properties, then advanced. Look at the bottom in Exclusive Mode. chck or un-check "allow applications to take exclusive....". Make sure the next box down is un-checked for the first attempt, you can checkmark it if changing the first box doesn't work. click apply and ok. Might have to restart to get it to work, I don't recall. Unchecking those boxes gave back my audio after loading a dvd to watch. Never did find out how they got checked.
Also, a long shot, check your BIOS and make sure your sound card/chip is enabled therein.

still no luck, and about the BIOS. I'm a bit of a n00b when it comes to computers, so i really don't know how to do it. Also here is the picture showing the things under sound in device manager. As I said I don't know if this says that the sound card is installed. http://gyazo.com/716e3f4599e1edfe4b8e2aa04e0df759

O.k. I can help get you into the BIOS, but every BIOS is a little different: Different way to get into it and where the sound choices are located is different. Is your computer home-built or pre-built or do you know what motherboard is in it? On all but one of my PCs you get in as follows: Restart the computer. As soon as the boot splash screen or the boot menu appears press the 'delete' key. (On most computers if you are seeing the post/boot screen, not a manufacturer's screen or mobo logo, at the bottom it will tell you what key to press to get into 'set up'; if not 'delete' press that key. Then you will need to scan the menus to find the sound devices; enable on board sound or, if by name, the Avnex virtual sound..
If that doesn't work, here's a google link to the drivers for the sound chip; try reinstalling the drivers.
https://www.google.com/search?q=AVNEX+virtual+sound+device&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:eek:fficial&client=firefox-a
As an aside, hopefully some others will jump in here and help should none of my input work. When finished with this thread, as a courtesy to the forum, please select the Best Answer if the problem is solved. Thanks. Keep in touch here.

6/30, 7:21p.m. PDT Just looked at thread, the google link didn't copy. Have attempted again, don't know if it will work. If it doesn't show up Google or Bing AVNEX virtual sound device and the search should give you a pretty good selection.

tried the boot and I still couldn't find anything about sound. the avnex is just a program to change your voice, i think it has nothing to do with the sound card, also sorry for the late reply

Well, we might be back at square one. We need you to post your hardware and OS specs, or the brand and model of your PC and its CPU, in order to troubleshoot anymore. I just read that the Avnex virual sound device is not your actual sound chip or card, it only enhances your sound cards abilities.
Post your parts so we can find out what sound chip is actually in the PC.

Sorry for late replies. I don't know how to post the specs, I mean what exact specs you want? I got the specs of the CPU-Z program, control panel? If you can, link me up with a program which shows the specs you want. I'm a bit new to these stuff, since I never had problems with my computer. Or it would make it easier if you tell me which exact specs I have to post like, CPU: , MOTHERBOARD: etc.

As a side note, I tried one of these programs which tell you which programs you have outdated, and it always tells me that the soundcard is outdated even when i had no problem with my sound. Somehow, I could never find the update of "AMD High Definition Audio Device". Thanks in advance, and once again thanks for replying.

Yes, by sepcifications I was talking about the parts in the PC or the PC Brand/model/CPU.
I think the AMD High Def. Audio device refers to audio on your VIDEO card that is sent through an HDMI cable to a monitor or TV; but can't make that determination until I see what is in your PC.
Sooo. If the PC is not a home-built then post the info about the manufacture. If it is a home/custom build post the following info;
Motherboard - maker(brand), model, revision number if it has one, BIOS (it's a #) if you know how to find it.
Videocard - brand, version/model
CPU (Processor) - Intel or AMD. Model # (such as i7 3750 or AMD FX8120, or i7 920 etc)
Power Supply Unit (PSU) - make and model and wattage (I don;t think this is a problem, but never know)
RAM - Brand, what kind (DDR, DDR2, DDR3), stock speed.
NOne of this problem sounds like harddrive or optical drive

My goal here is to find out exactly what sound chipset or sound card is installed in your PC. It did NOT show up in the screen shot you posted: AVNEX apparently isn't a sound card, the AMD HD sound is prbably for HDMI sound, and the other is for Digital output and should have no effect on analog sound such as the head phones.

CPU : Intel(R) Pentium(R) D CPU 3.20GHz
RAM : DDR 2 3GB
GPU : ATI Radeon HD 5670
MOTHERBOARD : http://gyazo.com/f4a33f4add14440ee877df13c8e1f325
and about the power supply, I have to open the tower for it right?

and also, I don't know if this could be the root for my problem, http://gyazo.com/6db61c99eb9b603902220d9b4df8b62f . I can't press on it, and this sometimes happens only when I turn on the computers. thanks again

Thank you.

You will have to select an operating system, then download the newest audio drivers and install them. NOTE; ASUS ONLY
SHOWS SUPPORT FOR THIS BOARD THROUGH THE Vista OS. If you are running Windows 7, try the Vista drivers.
If you try to install the drivers and get a notice to the effect that the sound device cannot be found or is not installed, that is going to tell you the sound chip/'card' is dead.

If the chip is dead you could buy a PCI Sound card and install it in one of the long white PCI slots, but personally I wouldn't spend anymore money on this pc if I could avoid it. Best Buy has a Creative SoundBlaster Audigy SE card for $29.99 and they used to have a house brand (RocketFish) for that much or a little LESS that had the Creative chip on it.

Jumping ahead of myself, before you install ANY drivers or new hardware, go into Control Panel, Programs and Features of if you are using XP 'Add/Remove' programs and uninstall the Avnex audio device.

AMD High def. is on the video card and is meant ONLY for HDMI output to a T.V. or audio receiver; if your monitor has speakers AND an HDMI connector, you could disconnect your DVI or VGA cable connect the Video card to the monitor with an HDMI cable and you would have your sound back.
