Hey guys,

I was looking at building my first water cooling system and I have two questions:

1)When I order a barb/compression fitting shall I make the ID equal to the ID of the chosen tube? For example get 1/2'' barb/compression fitting and 1/2'' tube or should I get a smaller tube (that would fit with some force maybe by heating it up)?

2) I would like to purchase a 5.25'' bay reservoir and a D5 pump to place on the case floor, so reservoir would be at the top of the case and pump at the bottom and the two would be connected by a tube running from top to bottom. I read that the two should be somehow connected to avoid the pump from running dry. Could you explain the rule better? Would the above placement work?

To answer your 1st Question, yes you match the ID barb/compression to the ID of tubing ( also match the OD as well )

the pump should always get water from the res.. however if you use a bay res, most will accommodate a pump as well. ( i ahve the 655 vario in my dual bay res. I don't have to worry about it going dry :D

The 1/2" ID fittings are designed to fit 1/2" ID tubing. You have several options for securing the tubing on to the fitting:

- Compression fittings - OD of the comp fitting must match the OD of the tube

- Clamps - Most clamps work with a range of OD sizes; any clamps designed for a particular size will follow the same restriction as the comp fittings.

- PerfectSeal fittings - these are designed to not use clamps or outer seals. I currently run some of these and they were a pain to get on initially but seem to secure just fine.

- Heating the tubing - like you mentioned, you could heat the tubing (boiling water is ideal) and stretch it around a fitting of a larger size (e.g. 3/8 ID tubing stretched to fit a 1/2 ID barb). These work similarly to the PerfectSeal fitting concept, though the PS fittings aren't that expensive TBH.

As long as your reservoir outlet is above your pump inlet, you won't run your pump dry. Keep in mind there are many 5.25" Bay reservoirs that you can mount the pump to, which eliminates that problem and potentially saves space (depending on your case layout).
 
1. With barb fittings, only the ID matters. Though the clamps you get need to match the OD of the tubing. With Compressions, they need to match the ID and OD of the tubing. Putting smaller tubing on barbs is relatively common, I run 7/16" tubing on 1/2" barbs, its a bit of a struggle to get on but hot water does it.

2. As long as the pump stays flooded while your power cycling, your res can be wherever you want.
Having a bay res and the pump below will be fine, gravity would flood the pump.

I recommend compression or clamps. Koolance makes very nice metal clamps, you need to match the OD as well with these.

The pump should ideally be fed by the res because it is easier to prime your pump. Fill your res > your res fills your pump > turn on your pump to prime the entire system. Otherwise you would have to manually prime the entire system. You might need to use your mouth to manually start the siphon and bleed the air.

Of course none of this matters once the loop is up and running.
