I also live in the UK.
For failure of a component, the liability is held by the person who sold you the product.
For cases such as this, where damage was caused by the component, the manufacturer is responsible.
Email the manufacturer, see what they say, then if they deny responsibility, file a lawsuit.
If they fail to attend court, you win by default, and they are required to cover damages as well as your lawyer fees. If they
do turn up, then you may lose, which will cost you dearly.
In most cases such as this, the company almost always fails to turn up at court.
The only problem I can really see here is if it's a "crap" brand, like some cheap Chinese knock-off, then they'll be harder to pin. If it's something like Corsair, then you'll be fine.
EDIT: Just read your post about the manufacturer. In this case, you are in the worst case scenario. An "unheard of" brand such as that will be much harder to take to court.
Moral of the story? Always buy from Corsair or XFX (etc.)
EDIT 2: I got the impression that
you installed it - if you didn't, then look to the person who installed it for you.
