Hi. I'm throwing together some old hardware with a new SSD for a build that will **only** be used to rip DVD/BD disks. I have both Phenom II X3 B75 & Phenom X4 9850 CPU's to pick from (AM2+ board). I thought it was a no-brainer to go with the newer B75, but CPUBenchMark shows it at the lower 2851 vs 2948. And within Windows rating I see the older Phenom at 7.1 versus 6.9. Is the older CPU in this case really going to be better for my purpose?

Solution
it does have an extra core, check the single thread bench, the 9850 got a 842 and the B75... well maybe i'm doing it wrong but all i can find is the Phenom II x4 B73 which got a 968 and since you wont be doing any gaming i think its safe to say the tri core will do better for you.

Solution
It looks like both within the margin of error as to how fast they are comparatively. I wouldn't worry about which one went into it if the machine was ONLY used for ripping movies, I don't think you'd notice a difference. I'd go the 4 core phenom one over a 3 core phenom 2 depending on if your compression software is multi threaded, if not, go with the 3 core with more speed per core.

Thanks guys. I went with the B75. Single threaded apps are a no brainer on that one. Multi-threaded would just sort of depend. The 9850 is a BE black edition --so I could easily overclock it-- but then I would have to deal with the heat and add more fans. The B75 is 95 watts vs the 9850 at 125 watts. The last variable here was that I can throw the 9850 up on ebay and it looks like I'll get a little more for it. Final note is that the B75 is indeed an odd one, but you can find it via part number HDXB75WFK3DGI.

Also the B75 is a tri-core, amd tri-cores are just quad cores with 1 disabled, for various reason, match demand or a bad ish cpu that cant function with 4 so they make it 3. if your lucky you can unlock that 4th core and have a quad core.
