Can Someone Diagnose My Power Problems?

Hello folks.

(First post) - I am fairly tech savvy when it comes to custom computers as I have been building my own PCs for over 10 years. Although right now I am stomped over something.. I'm about 90% certain I am having a PSU problem although I'd appreciate some 2nd opinions.

So for the past while I have had a setup like this:

  • AMD Phenom II X4 964
    16 gigs of Ram
    3 Hard Drives
    1 blu ray drive
    1 Nvidia GTX 480
    Corsair Hydro H100 water cooler
    2 LED fans
Thermaltake Toughpower 750w (Bought in 2008)

So everything has been working dandy, I upgrade bits and bobs every few years like RAM and CPU. The Power supply is the oldest part in my machine. I am a video game developer and I use my PC A LOT.

So 2 weeks ago I done some major upgrading which involved a:

Asus Z87 Pro Motherboard
Intel i7 Haswell 4770k
Nvidia GTX 770
Sandisk Extreme SSD (I now have 4 HDDs)

All setup without a hitch however, when I play something like Tomb Raider or GRID 2 my system would instantly turn off. It would reboot into the bios and say something about an instable power supply and power surge.

After some rooting around I disabled the error and played like normal.. However now over the past week I have been getting instant turn offs again when playing Starcraft 2 and Borderlands 1.. No errors or anything telling me whats happening.

The Event Log is giving me the power kernal error saying unexpected shutdown.

So I am 90% sure my PSU has seen the end of its says but I don't know why this hasn't happened earlier since in theory an i7 is more efficient than the AMD Phenom II and on the Nvidia website the 480 and 770 draw the same amount of power.

Has anyone got any theories as to what it could be?

Many Many Thanks for reading.

Thermaltake is not the best name in psu. I would say avoid them. That being said you got 5 years out of that power supply. As the supply is used the components age and produce less power as a result. The 480 used a little less power then the 770 but the switch from AMD to Intel would negate that so you are right that they are about even.

I would put it down to just an old psu. Get a Antec, Seasonic or XFX in 600W or higher.

This modular Seasonic 620W is a great deal at $75. It has the right pins for your new card.
