Don't install them automatically. You should make sure "system restore" is on, you may need it to go back if things get bad! Watch the "update history" as you go to see which updates are installed "successful" and which "failed". Manually choose the first 5 and then install the one that seems to fail or hang by itself. It is often wise to do a restart after difficult updates and then check to make sure they are still "successful". Then continue installing them in small groups of maybe ten at a time and if it seems to hang on one, again install it by itself. If one doesn't seem to want to install, leave it until you are done and try installing it last. You can look at the update details and see how significant it is and decide if you really need it. It will take a bit longer, but sometimes necessary!
