New GTX 670 - PC won't boot

Hi guys

I have a Gigabyte EP45t-ud3lr Motherboard (P45 chipset) with 8 MB of DDR3 1333. The CPU is a quad core 9650 so most of my gear is dated (3-4 years).

I bought a new GTX 670 and my PC won't boot with this installed. When I return to my GTX 285 it's fine. (I also tried DDR 1600 RAM which it is supposed to run on this board with no luck - but that's another problem).

My PSU is a quality Seasonic 650w unit (model SS-650 HT) so I'm assuming power should not be the issue with the graphics card? I've got 3 hard drives, two DVD burners, a large CPU fan ans 2 other cooling fans.

I've checked the seating of power plugs on the 670 and although the 8 pin is tight it seems to seat with pressure. I've updated my BIOS to the latest (F10) but can't think of anything else I can try. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers and thanks
JD

boot into safe mode with the 285 installed - device manager/Display adapters - uninstall the gpu by right mouse clicking on NVIDIA GTX 285 - delete all files when asked
clear CMOS
reboot with new gpu in safe mode - install 320.18 drivers as administrator
reboot and enjoy

Thanks for your reply - I got lucky and solved it.

I read about overloading PSU rails here so I tried different cables from the PSU to link into the power adaptors that came with the card (rather than use the dedicated 8 and 6 pin plug cables from the PSU). Bingo - it worked.

Thanks again

]So, you didn't connect the 670 to the ps properly from the beginning?

I used the PSU 6 and 8 pin plugs that are there for the purpose - I can only assume that they were both on the same rail - meaning an overload. By using only one of these and selecting other power leads I've obviously separated the two. That's the best explanation I can think of.

Thanks for your help.
