I had a toshiba m505-s4940 with a hitachi 320 GB sata hdd for about 3 years and then it failed to boot. I was able to boot it using a hirens cd and i don't know much about computers so I just bought a new laptop. I bought an enclosure and was able to recover most of the files using recuva. I was wondering if I re-formatted the hdd if it would be reliable enough to use as an external hardrive

If it has had any bad sectors(check smart data with something like crystaldiskinfo), you should toss it.
If it just happened to corrupt for other reasons that are not hardware related it may still be usable.
