I recently upgraded my alienware m15x laptop from windows 7 to windows 8 and am now experiencing major download speed loss. Before upgrading I ran a speedtest and hit around 20mbps and now I can barely hit 1. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like the operating system hasn't recognize the network adapter being more than 10Mbps.

Im windows 7 so not sure where it is in 8 or if its the same but ill try, open networking and click on local area connection that's used and click properties.

If there is a configure button under 'connect using', click that. There will be series of tabs, click link speed and try 'identify adapter'

Does the description mention gigabit for connect using?

If generic, will need to find the correct driver for your laptop.

Yes my local network is gigabit but it is turned off as i am using WiFi. When I do plug my laptop directly into the router the download speed is fine though and if I take my laptop to my friends house then I don't have any issues either. The only thing I can think of is that windows 8 installed a network driver that isn't compatible with the router or something like that. I have already talked to my ISP and the issue isn't on their end either. I also tried installing a software that would check my ports but the software wasn't compatible with windows 8 unfortunately.

ok lan is fine, your wifi isnt. Sort of making sense now. Have you looked for a win8 compatible wifi drive from alienware for your laptop? Or even uninstall the wifi driver and install windows7 version if it will allow it.
