I have a core 2 duo CPU E8400 @3.00 ghZ backed by 2 gb ddr 2 ram.I have ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT graphic card.I have just bought Dell ST2420l Led monitor.I want to play games on 1080p Resolution. But when i try to play on it it lags.I know my graphic card is outdated. But my question here is that if i buy better graphic card only will it solve my problem and will i be able to play games on 1080p without lagging.

You need to get both new VGA and CPU ( possibly a new motherboard, too ), to play new titles at 1080p fluently. Getting just a new graphic card only won't solve your problems in CPU-intensive games.

actually the c2d e8400 is still very capable of playing games. if you were to upgrade only one component, then your gpu needs to go. a 650ti boost will serve you well but don't expect to play on ultra - more along the lines of 1080p medium. i'd tell you one thing though; don't expect your c2d to last for long - you should plan ahead on overhauling your rig asap.

Yes, it will solve problems with low FPS in a lot of games. But as nokiddingboss replied, you should think of getting a new CPU soon, too.
