Hey guys, So I bought a new 4TB Seagate HD a bout a month ago and recently it has decided to go nuts. When I go to access something I have on there I get a message telling me I need to format the drive before I can use it. http://gyazo.com/dae308610196b9d4c142700da711cea2

This has been done about 3 times now.

I record alot of gameplay so I have a few questions.

A. is there anyway for me to get in and grab one of my clips?

B. Is there a way to stop it from doing this or did I get a bad hard drive?

Thank you so much for reading!

Oops, your hard disk drive master boot sector might got damaged. There are many related raw drive problems and you may encounter such errors reported by windows

chkdsk is not available for raw drive
drive is not formatted, do you want to format it now (raw is not regular file system type - usually fat32, ntfs, ntfs5)

so far as i know there is no tool which could change your raw back to ntfs but you can restore files from the raw disk.

resource that may help you http://www.rawfilesystem.com

It's disappointing, I only run a SSD outside of the 4TB HDD in question. So I don't have enough space to recover much of the footage and this is the 3rd time in a month. (Raw gameplay files are huge like 100-200GB easy)

Oh well thank you for the info, It has been appreciated

OK! The "not formatted error" message often could be caused by many problems, such as virus infection, hard drive problem, power surge, or problems with the operating system.
So, you could try to check several things:
1). Use a diagnostic tool to check whether it is physically damaged, such as bad sector problems.
Seatools could be a good choice to go: http://www.seagate.com/support/downloads/seatools/

2). Run your antivirus tool to scan this drive completely to see whether it is caused by virus attack.

3). Try to restore your saved data back and then try to format this drive latter.
Many problems could be resolve by reformatting. So, try to use a data recovery freeware available online and restore your data at first: http://www.freeware-fix.blogspot.com/2013/03/disk-drive-not-formatted-error.html

4). Consult an expert to help you.

Hi, I read through all the comments here.
My WD My book essential 1 TB powered HDD was asking to format itself, i guess probably due to an improper plug out or probably because its dying.
I formatted it and recovered all data using easeus. It worked, took a lot of time, almost overnight and abother 6 hours to save it on another drive but it worked. Thanks to all of you.

I've had a similar issue with a newly purchased Seagate Backup Plus Slim Portable Drive USB 3.0. I run Windows 7 Premium Home on my laptop and at work my PC runs Windows 7 Enterprise - they give the same response. I've checked the drive with Windows tools and Seagates own tools, no errors detected. I can format the drive and use it until next time i plug it in, then windows ask to format it again. I have older Iomega USB drives that work just fine and never had this problem. I'm no expert but could this be related to Seagate models? Is there an issue with the cables?
