My PC is outdated. It turns out a GTX 260 and 3 GB of DDR2 system ram doesn't play BF3 so well, and with The announcement of the console specs I knew I would have to update.
I have a graphics card in mind. A Radeon HD 7970.
The plan was to upgrade my graphics card, motherboard and ram, and leave my CPU alone for now, but I am unsure whether my initial assumption that my CPU was still good enough.
So my first question is will my Phenom II X4 945 bottleneck my graphics card? will I need to upgrade that too?
And if my CPU is good enough for now, I am looking to get an ATX AM3+ board, In the £60 region (on recommendation by a friend), though the price is still flexible.
I haven't Overclocked before but may consider it for my current CPU.
I don't care much for onboard sound as I have a soundcard. I only use 3 SATA ports currently but room to expand is good. While I don't have plans for crossfire yet, options are always good.
A PS/2 port for a keyboard would be good as I am considering getting a mechanical NKRO keyboard which often requires one, but I could probably get a USB adapter.
I have been looking on my own and have found the ASRock 990FX. It's more expensive than I said I was looking for, but its got everything I could ever need.
Motherboards have never been my strong point so forgive me if I am missing something obvious.
One more question. I am hearing a lot of talk about how AMD's latest cores really aren't as good as the good old Phenoms. in that case, is it worth bothering with an AM3+ motherboard? from the sounds of it, by the time they make a decent gaming CPU again, they will probably be on a whole new socket.
