Hello,
I have a 1TB HDD of Western Digital(WD), which connects to the devices via USB and is powered using a Power Cord separately.
It connects and shows/displays/plays all the data on a LCD/LED television.
However, recently when I am connecting it to any PC or Laptop, it takes an enormous time to detect and even it does :
1. I cant access it as it askes me to format it when trying to 'open' or even 'explore'.
2. The 'properties' show 0 byte for both allocated and free space.
3. CHKDSK failed.
7. Changed disk drive letter as per : http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/271598-32-
external-hard-disk-format
8.Error Checking yields "The Disk check could not be performed because Windows can't
access the disk"

Can anyone suggest any remedy without the advice of formatting the drive...
as the HDD contains data collected over 7 years and which does not have a backup!!

Follow these steps, and your problem will be solved:
1. Go to Run by pressing 'Windows' + 'R'
2. Write 'cmd'
3. Now write 'chkdsk /f h:'
('H' is the name of yourr hard drive)
follow ordinary steps, and your hard will be recover everything without formatting it.
Best wishes

Hello,
Same problem here with my 1TB WD hard disk :/
When I connect my external HD to my Wipro laptop, it shows drive name but when I try to open it - it says "Need to format". I have very important memories/videos/photos in it.
OS: WinXP Professional.

I also tried by trying 'chkdsk /f m:' command & it says "The type of file system is RAW. CHKDSK is not available for RAW drives."

Please help me ASAP.
Thanks in advance.
