Processor price vs payout

I am very new to computers, and really want to build my own for gaming, on a budget. I read a ton of (old) reviews about how amazing the E8400 was (is) and how easily it you could OC it. I found one on amazon for ~$150. Then I read this article on here http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/ivy-bridge-wolfdale-yorkfield-comparison,3487-18.html and it looks like the E8400 doesn't compare to the i3-3220, or the i3-3225 (I don't know what the difference is, they seem to have the same specs but the 5 is $10 more expensive.) but compared to the kinda outdated E8400, the newer and better i3-3225 is also cheaper!

Can someone explain to me how this is possible and maybe some pros/cons to both?

Sorry for the long post but thanks for your time in advance!!

This may be of better resource: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-cpu-review-overclock,3106.html .

As someone new to building computers, I wouldn't advise overclocking. This is just my opinion, but I don't see the economic value to overclocking.

Also agree with Swifty. If you care about boot times, multi tab browse like crazy like I do, and just want an overall spifier system, go i5 quad core.

i5's are a little out of my price range, and I'm probably wrong but it seems like from what I've read that dual core is almost equal to quad core in gaming, but if you're going to run more systems at once, which I guess gaming doesn't require, then you will want more cores, but I don't think i need the quad just for gaming... but again I could very well be wrong?
(And just learning how to use this site)

I honesly really like the AMD FX-6300 CPU. I mean I'm not biased I run a bitcoin farm so I have all kinds of hardware I just find that the FX-6300 is a well rounded all around great chip for gamers and people getting into computers. I like to pair them with a Radeon HD 7870 myself for bitcoin farming but I believe that for gaming nVIDIA may have some better choices in that department right now.

What is important to note is that upcoming titles will be threaded. There is porting from an Xbox One to a PC... it's pretty much the same game that you transfer over now from Console to PC as the hardware is the same.

Both Xbox One and the Sony Playstation 4 will be using an AMD Octocore APU. That means 8 theads of AMD Serial Processing power coupled with an AMD GCN based Graphics chip.

So expect the fact that games use little threads now (usually 4 cores now in newer titles though many still only use one or two cores) to change in a big way.
