I'm at a military school and need to hide my wifi

So I'm at a military school and I am planning on getting a mobile wireless hotspot, but I would like to limit its range to just connecting to the laptop sitting next to it. It can still be found if I hide the SSID, which would get it taken away. So what else can I do? Is it possible to limit the range to just a few feet while still having fast speeds? Could I put a thick layer of tin foil to one side of it to stop the signal from going in the other direction from my laptop? Do mobile hotspots work differently from routers? Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

They would have to know the ssid to find it first. But you are gambling my friend.

the only thing you can do is to usb tether it then it will not broadcast. you cannot limit broadcast strength to that degree. while it is possible, going to a hard line is the only way to be safe and is easily accomplished with just about any android based phone

Have fun getting kicked out.

Do the words "Code of Honor" mean anything to you?

But can I tether a mobile hotspot? not an actual android phone?

This is America he can take any risk he wants to. sounds like all they do is confiscate his stuff. I bet the penalty is not that severe for getting internet access. maybe he is just incredibly brave and a risk taker. a hard tether is the way to go.

Erm, I won't be kicked out. Half the school has a hotspots, usually from their phone, but sometimes they get found and taken away and given to their parents. And no, the words Code of Honor mean nothing to me. My crazy as shit mother sent me here and I don't feel obligated to follow these fucked up rules. Sorry :/

I would have to know provider and possible hotspot devices

http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/store/controller?ite...

under details > features

you will see 2/3 of the way down it says USB tethering–capable with Windows and Advanced security features

now you will have to do a little more reading or call verizon and ask if the wifi can be shut off.

also;
The device screen with navigation keys allows you to quickly and easily scroll through menus to view how many devices are connected, your battery strength, signal strength, network and roaming information, software updates, password and more.

I would just go down there with a laptop and test it out and see if it works with wifi off and tethered working.

You can always find hidden APs with something like Aircrack or inSSIDer.

Surely you can get a USB modem - I've seen tons of those around. All three main telcos where I am sell them. Will have a look.

If they know what they are doing and bother to enforce it, they could find anything connecting to the cellphone network. Given you say half of them have hotspots, I doubt they bother.

EDIT: http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/store/controller?ite...

I can't get in without telling it where I am (and it won't accept NZ), but that should have USB modems.

Ah, thank you, that seems to be what I am looking for. I suppose I can just take a usb extension cord and plug that in between the modem and laptop? Because I'm hiding the hotspot in a gutted speaker :p
And to elaborate on getting caught. I probably would be fine. But every once in a while one of the IT guys gets angry at the world and takes it out on the world by walking through the halls with his phone looking for hotspots. And every once in a while your room gets randomly searched for drugs and they find your hotspot. It would really suck to sign up for a two year contract and then get it taken. "Better safe than sorry" hasn't let me down yet.

Edit: I seem to have answered my own question by looking at the website, nevermind!

Yeah, hiding it in a speaker would work. If you wanted to make it really tricky, you could do some modding to a USB stick an put it in that - they aren't going to check every one.

usb sticks aren't allowed either :p
But once again, the rules are pretty lax, so I guess that would make it less likely to be taken. And I plan on putting my "speaker" on the windowsill where it will get the best signal, and running the "audio cable" to my laptop.

So they ban external storage, but you're allowed laptops (which have hugely more storage)?

Sounds kind of stupid.

Wonder if they'll notice that your "speaker" has a USB cable? I suggest leaving the actual speaker working - there's usually enough room to fit something like a USB modem in.

Yah, I know, some rules are pretty ridiculous, but its REALLY loosely enforced so whatever. And they'll never notice the usb cable sticking out; they aren't actively searching for these things, hell, one kid got a big subwoofer, gutted it, and built a fucking desktop in it since we are only allowed laptops. They aren't scrutinizing every little thing trying to confiscate shit, theres just a chance that someone might walk into my room and be like, "im grumpy and hate my job so I'm taking this flash drive/hotspot/other thing normally allowed.
