As predicted, the prices of Gigabyte 770 OC 4GB would start going up

This is a discussion thread. Please no haters...

So after looking around for a GPU for a new build, I finally decided to get a 770, but which one?

With 3x 1080p screens and 4th 1080p screen (a TV for watching shows and movies) I was sure I'd get a 4GB version. Zotac was the first to announce a 4GB but right now they 'still' haven't released it.

Gigabyte was one of the first to release a 4GB version. But unlike Zotac, Gigabyte had a OC version and coupled with their new and improved 3X WindForce cooler, it 'has' the highest out-the-box overclock. I happened to be online when it was added to stock on Ebuyer (http://goo.gl/qYwWg) for £376. You'll notice the price has gone up to just shy of £400 (fluctuates by a few pounds every few hours). This price hike is happening across every reputable site I consider when looking to purchase my card.

So why has the price gone up of 'this' card where as other 770 4GB haven't budged?

Other than Gigabyte being a well known brand, its agreed across the board to be a really quiet GPU. And, most enthusiasts don't appreciate how much the overclock out-the-box means to the 'average' gamer. The average gamer being one that doesn't care that other 770's can be OC'd at similar levels and higher than the Gigabyte 770. All they care about about is that it's the fastest 770 around and they just need to chuck it in and play.

What do you guys think? Opinions please.

I agree but not because of the competition from EVGA, rather the overprice for a lesser card. Its likely to have driven the sales up for Gigabyte's 770 OC 4GB. Even then, its cheaper than EVGA's version.

As for the 7970, I found this simple comparison >> http://goo.gl/Q5JBI and there's another thread I read here on THW comparing the 7970 to 770 >> http://goo.gl/BvrQH.

Out of the 2 cards, the 7970 has the best value as it includes a few free games and is cheaper. The 770 is only 5-10% quicker. I got Gigabyte 770 OC 4GB for the larger VRAM and the improved 3X WindForce cooler. Perfect for my setup.

Think that might need an edit? You're absolutely right about the value of factory overclocks for those who don't overclock (assuming of course it's a worthwhile OC - I had a Sapphire 5970 factory-overclocked from 725/1000 to 735/1010, seriously).

LOL. Thanks!

The factory OC of the Sapphire 5970 is laughable. I wouldn't pay a penny towards that.

However, the reference 770 is clocked at 1046/1085 but Gigabyte's OC version is 1137/1189, that's a difference of 91/104, which is enough of a difference to always give it an edge to a reference card that's not OC'd. This is precisely why I believe Gigabytes 770 coupled with the best price to performance out of the pre-OC'd cards has made the price go up due to increased demand.

Do you agree? Or is this discussion pointless? :S

US prices annoy me coz its equivalently cheaper than UK prices. The increased taxes and duties mean UK residents always pay 10-15% more than you yanks. Its not even worth posting it from the US as the postage works out to be the same. :(

For the money, I totally agree the 7970 is better value. But with my triple 1080p (plus 1 auxiliary), 4GB VRAM is what makes the difference. Don't have space for 2 cards either. Would've got a Titan, if I could afford it.

Haha yeah I honestly don't know what Sapphire were thinking. Were they trying to be funny? It's actually called the "OC Edition". Don't worry - I didn't pay extra for that version :) Though they did a properly overclocked Vapour-X edition too.

I don't think it's a pointless discussion - factory overclocks are genuinely worth considering (decent OCs anyway) for users who prefer not to mess with clock frequencies. I've observed on average a 10% clock speed gain yields around 7% framerate gain. That does vary widely by the game (and probably settings too) though so just a ballpark figure.

Clearly a marketing ploy. Pisses me off when I see "deals" that cost you more for less. W*****S!!

I know a few PC gamers that know very little about their machines and components. All they care about is having a care-free gaming experience and I totally agree with their attitude. That's the best thing about console gaming, you forget about the console and focus on the game. :)

Haha yeah there is appeal in the knowledge that your system (Xbox or whatever) has exactly the hardware it needs and games run at the exact graphical settings they need to for acceptable performance. That said, I'll take PC gaming any day. I have an Xbox and Wii but barely ever touch them - they just don't compare to anti-aliased 1080 HD visuals and the precision of mouse aiming (I know you can connect mice to consoles but game support varies). Though there is some brilliant fun console-only gaming like Mario Kart (well any Mario) or WWE games.
