I have an Asus M5A97 EVO mb and I decided to update my CPU to an FX 6300. I Cleared the CMOS and updated to the latest BiOS for this motherboard (verified version after the flash). I installed the CPU (in the correct position) applied my Article Silver 5 thermal compound carefully spreading it evenly across the top of the CPU and then placed my Xigmatek cooler on top of it (worked for my old Phenom X3 730). I turned it on it recognized the new CPU and got into BIOS. Did not alter anything in BIOS and exited. Got to the Windows login screen and started to smell something that smelled like burning hair. Instantly I turned the machine off. I then took off the cooler cleaned off the Article Silver and inspected the CPU and found no visual defects nor did it smell burnt. I then placed it back in and attempted to start my machine again and it would not post. I then removed my CPU and and placed my old CPU in and it posted immediately. Did I do something wrong? Is it possible that it is just a defective chip? If you need any further info let me know. Rest of config is 8 gigs of Corsair 1333 ram, 620 watt Antec power supply, XFX 7850, in an Antec Sonata case, and 1 TB WD Blue hdd. I did a fresh install of Windows 7 home premium before I started this. Bought the CPU at Microcenter. Thanks!

Solution
sounds like a defective chip, I would file for RMA immediately

it doesn't sound like you did anything wrong, and the folks at microcenter are really good about things like this :)
