I will be getting an Asus Z87 Maximus VI formula mobo (all 4 pin headers) and a Haswell 4770K CPU. Can I use the CPU mobo fan headers for this Corsair H100i? I do not need the ilink wires or anything else as I want the motherboard to control all my fans in the case. I am wondering if this is possible as Corsairs watercooling solution looks like it needs various wires to make it work. Can it use just as simple 4pin PWM hookup to the mobo?

Solution

We're mixing things a bit, let's see. The 2 fans (SP120) that come with the H100i have 4pin connectors (I made a mistake before saying they were 3pin, but I took a look inside my computer and they are in fact 4pin). These can be connected to the motherboard 4pin fan headers and you can control them by any software you want within windows. However, they come with a special adapter to connect them to the pump, which then by usb connects to the motherboard. This allows...

No need for that, the pump only has a 2 pin connector with a RPM reader and ground, so there's no way for the mobo to control the pump speed.

So it looks like H100i may not be for me. I want the Asus Fan Expert 2 or the mobo AI program to run my fans for me instead of using a fan controller as I may place the computer on the other side of the wall and wont see or hear the fans running. I would rather set up a fan profile at say 3 different speeds for what I am doing. Profile 1 Emailing minimum speed. Profile 2 General everyday tasks. Profile 3 Running games. I am trying to make the fans run as automatically as I can w/o my intervention - except to check on-screen from time to time to be sure of proper fan operation. Does this sound doable?

Currently I have a Asus Z87 Sabertooth mainboard with a Kraken x60 and Noctua fans connected directly to the mainboard.
Before that I had the H100i with Corsair SP120, connected the same way.
No problem at all.

Seriously, why not use it the way it's meant to be and control the fans with corsair link? It lets you customize fan curves and has three presets: quiet, balanced and high performance, and you can change between the presets with a couple clicks under windows (even custom configs)

csf60,

So it seems then that - I can run the H100i with 2 pin wires connected to the 4 pin CPU header if I open Corsair link as that will give me fan control for slow-medium-fast correct? What if I don't use the corsair fans and use the Noctua AF-A14PWM fans instead?

Yes, Corsair link gives you fan control for slow-medium-fast and every custom profile you would like to make. It has more options too such as configuring the color of the pump LED.

The 2pin connector i talked about is meant to be plugged into the motherboard CPU fan header but it serves no purpose other than telling your motherboard: "hey, I have a cooling solution up and running even if no fans are connected to you"
