Booting from USB

Can somebody explain to me why when I cloned a HDD hosting an installation of Windows 8 and then tried to boot from the HDD via USB it didn't work?

I did this merely to see if it was possible but it turned out not to be but I'm struggling to understand why.. The HDD boots when connected via SATA so the interface difference alone seems enough for it to fail.

When connected via USB the system goes to boot but bluescreens before it reaches the login screen.

Just looking for some insight really.

Thanks

It probably doesn't have the drivers for booting from USB. Does it allow you to install it to USB?

You might need to set the BIOS to boot from USB HDDs, but that won't cause a blue screen, unless the 'I have no OS' screen is blue.

Well everything was configured accordingly and it detected the HDD and proceeded to boot from it. It was looking promising but it would always bluescreen and fail. Plugging the drive in via SATA resulted in it working just fine so it seems that having it interface with the computer via USB caused the error but I just don't understand why? My thinking was as long as what was on the drive was good, how that info was transferred wasn't important (seems I was wrong though).
