I Installed a paid for version of AVG and performed a "deep clean" defrag. Since then my pc will boot up to the Welcome screen but whether in safe mode or not will not progress to open windows. The pc is therefore completely unusable now....

Solution
A bit confused here, there is no such thing as a "deep clean defrag". A defragmentation of the drive just moves files around the disk to make them a bit faster to access. Is that what you did? Or did you do a full system clean like trying to remove temp files, cleaning out the registry, things like that?

In either case though, any number of glitches could have made the system unbootable by deleting or moving or breaking files. You may need to run a Windows setup in Repair mode using a Windows disk, or do a system restore and then restore your files from a backup. If you don't have a backup, you probalby would want to buy a new hard drive and install Windows on that, copy the files back from your old drive.

Did you contact AVG...

Did you contact AVG support about this? They may have some techs that could help you without needing to re-install Windows. Since you did not use a free program, you will have some support from them.
