Hello, as the title says I am looking for a replacement for my evga gtx 295. I chose my words carefully because I am not necessarily looking for an upgrade but just some newer card. I am getting, by my standards, acceptable performance from the 295 but it is just too hot! Not to mention the power requirements made me put in a second power supply just for it.
I am also not looking to fork out major cash for something like a 780 because I just simply don't require performance like that. Games I play right now would be Tomb Raider, Bioshock infinite, Red Orchestra 2, Dark souls, call of duty 4, starcraft 2. Pretty mainstream stuff is what I enjoy and would like to keep enjoying with the new card for a year or two. Any suggestions would be welcome, thanks :)

(Also, I am not biased to nvidia, an amd solution would be good too.)

What temps are you getting? Whens the last time you took it apart and cleaned it?

What is your budget and at which resolutions do you play and also at which quality ultra or high?

Regardless of budget, the 760 has very good bang for buck right now, and it sits at a mere $250.

My budget would be around 200 usd and would be willing to go to 250. I game at 1080p with a secondary 1080p monitor for non gaming purposes. I do not forsee myself getting another monitor or a higher resolution one. And for the quality I would be fine playing games at med-high without or with low AA

I will check the temperatures now while Im gaming. Do you know what the normal temps should be and if cleaning it would significantly help? I havent cleaned it in about a year or 2

Then the 660 would suit you quite nicely. Also, the 7870 GHz has very good bang for buck, and it also comes with 3 free games.

Pulling it apart and cleaning/replacing the TIM helped a lot with my 295's. If you havent cleaned it in a year or two i can only imagine how much dust has clogged the cooler.

The last time i used it was after a cleaning and i was getting 75-78C temps in BF3 with the card overclocked to 625 core and 1250 mem

Thanks for the suggestion, I was eyeing that too. I find your profile picture very fitting for this situation, haha. For the 660 or 7870 is there one you would lean toward for reasons other than brand loyalty?

the hd 7870 is the best bang for the buck my friend and can easily over clock to 1300mhz.So, grab your hands on it.

The 7870 is now overpriced compared to the 760 and only a fraction will hit 1300 core

Well in some games, the 7870 Ghz is quicker, and the 660 is faster in others. But in this case, I think the three free games that come with the 7870 is the deal breaker. BTW, there is no such thing as brand loyalty to me, it's all about what gives you the most for your money.

The 7870 is not overpriced. It is similarly priced to the 660, which makes the price to performance ratio reflect that of the 760. However you are right about the OC, 1300 core is a bit extreme, and would likely require a custom BIOS.

Just did a search and there's one 7870 that is a steal right now for 169 but the majority of them are 229-239. IMO way too close to a 760

The card is idling at 56c on one core and 61 on the other. And under realistic load it gets to ~82c. That is with no OC so I think I am going to have to give my card a clean

Definitely needs a cleaning and TIM change. If you have any questions about taking it apart let me know.

That 7870 does look very slick indeed. For either the 660, 760, or 7870 you guys are talking about would I be able to see a noticeable increase or decrease in performance relative to the 295? This is unrelated but I noticed it has a 256bit memory interface and it seems like there is a rising interest in that as an actual buying consideration. Are new games or programs actually utilizing this or am I going crazy?

Big +1 to that. I'd buy one myself if I hadn't bought a GTX670 already.

You will see a night and day performance difference. But keep in mind, the 760 has the best bang for buck in terms of performance per dollar. The 7870 gets perks from the 3 free games, but it is really only worth it if you get the model that Intel God linked above, or another that is similarly priced.

I already have the 3 games provided from the deal with the 7870 so that isn't as enticing. I also found a 7870 myst which people say is like a 7930 for 190$ used on ebay. I dont know how you all feel about used components but that seems like a pretty good deal. If not that I will probably choose between a 660 ti or a 760. My friend will sell me his 660 Ti FTW Signature2 for $210. So many choices D:

Used computer parts can often be very risky. I would not recommend it. However, if you are willing to take a chance, the prices of used parts will beat out any retail in terms of pricing. IMO, if you are willing to pay the $250, the 760 cannot be beat.
