I'm usinng an hp envy ultrabook 6t-1000 with a 2nd gen Intel Core i5-2467M Processor(1.6 GHz) and a 2GB AMD Radeon HD 7670M discrete graphics card. 4 GB of DDR3 RAM.

Until recently, I've had no problems gaming. About a month ago, however, my laptop started overheating. I hadn't gamed in a while but I started playing Diablo III after a 7 month break from D3, maybe a 3 month break from gaming as a whole, and it would overheat after 20 minutes. My laptop would get hot (not surprising, this happens when playing intensive games), but then my laptop shut down. On restart, I got a screen saying it was because my laptop overheated.

or a couple of weeks I thought that the problem was with D3. I turned on Vsync and limited foreground FPS and that gave me about 20 minutes more, but my laptop would still overheat and shutdown after around 40/45 minutes.

I started playing FTL and had no problems. Then I played Rochard and again, my laptop shutdown. I still wasn't sure if it was the games or my laptop, so I played (vanilla) Skyrim on ultra settings for about an hour before my laptop shutdown again.

When I first got the laptop, and up until these problems began, I never had any problems with my laptop shutting down from overheating.

All this happened when I was playing on a desk. HP CoolSense is on. I tried using SpeedFan to manually keep my fans going at a high speed to prevent this but SpeedFan doesn't seem to be compatible with my laptop.

Any explanations for this or things I can do to fix the problem?

Well, i recommend a specialist...because are so many little screws which differ slightly...and so many clamps in various hidden places... you could easly break something.... and in lap-top`s usualy you must disassemble it fully to reach the CPU/GPU on motherboard (including screen and wif antenna). If you really want to do it yourself search for disassembly instructions (videos) on your particular model.

Is this something I could do myself or would you recommend that I have a professional do it?

If you want to know, the only thing I've done with computers other than clean the insides is replace CPUs, GPUs, and my PSU once (obviously did all this on a desktop).
