I am looking to buy a computer in the 1000$ price range to use in rendering. As the renderer uses the gpu, the cpu doesn't really matter a lot, any decent one will do. The issue im having is deciding if I should make one or two computers. Two computer seems to give more performance for the same price.

One computer(combo):

Two computers:

2*

Cpu/Motherboard/ram:(244$)

Hard drive(60$)

GPU: Gtx 660 (4000 passmark, 210$)

Additional info:The computer needs to be "quiet", it will be in the same room where I sleep.
The rendering engine I am using works only with cuda(nvidea)
Is water cooling an option? As I said, I will be sleeping in the same room, so the card should be quiet.
A sli configuration is only about 160% faster not 200%.
The price of the monitor is not included.

Summary:
I choose the gtx 660 because it gives the best performance/quietness for the price but if you have another graphic card that outmatches it for the price, don't hesitate to post it :).
So, One or two computers?

Thanks!

get the gtx760. its only a few bucks more (about $50 more or less) but it offers a much superior performance than the gtx660.

Hmm, if you are doing CUDA rendering, you may actually want to find a used GTX580, they are superior to the 600 series and GTX760 and 770 in terms of compute performance. The GTX780 and Titan are better, but also cost $650 and $1000, respectively. GTX580 are going for $200-250 at the moment.

GTX580 do use a lot more power (244W rated, overclocked is significantly more), but some of the fan solutions are very quiet. Liquid cooling would really set you back on cost. My old ASUS DCUII GTX580 when I ran a single card was fairly quiet even under heavy load.

Good catch. It really does seem to be a lot better for the little price increase and the gpu boost 2.0 is also nice.

Yeah, I saw the 5xx series are better but sadly they don't sell them new anymore :/. If I'm going to pay 1000$, I might as well buy new hardware that will last more and have better support.

Out of interest, how much does a used 580 cost and where could I buy it(newegg and the other official sites didn't have it except new). Ebay seemed to have a few for 200$ - 300$.

Ebay is exactly where I got a match to my DCUII, I was the only bidder and managed to snag one for $200 with free shipping. It was used, but after trying to stuff them in a atx case I had to get liquid cooling. Problem was I couldn't get proper waterblocks, so I ended up with what you see in my signature.

Yep, 130$ cooler for a 200$ card :). Anyway, I think I decided on my final build and im gonna stick with the new stuff.

Without further ado, here's the computer:
