I asked in the graphics forum and didnt get much help. Im now thinking that my SLI cards are CPU bottlenecked? Reason being at times during the Metro Last Lite bench FPS will be 45 but card usage is being reported as 70%. At first I was thinking there was some SLI issue but then thought maybe its the CPU? I thought that 3770k were a bit overkill as far as gaming goes no? Anyway if you guys think im right let me know lol. If not I would love to hear if there is any fix. My CPU again is a 3770k its currently at 4.5ghz.

I think you're right that it may be the bottleneck at times. people have seen similar issues with big firefights on multiplayer BF3 etc

however, the i7 is overkill because games fail to fully utilize the hyper-threading technology available, making an i5 giving you similar performance. similarly, an i7 3970X won't get you more performance for the same reasons (extra cores/threads will not be used). until games are coded to use more cores/threads, that OCed i7 is basically the best you can get for gaming.

Bottleneck, technically aye. Realistically, there is nothing better to be used so you are getting the max possible performance. In these situations, I hate the term bottleneck, as that implies there is something you can do about it.

well, the term "bottleneck" is correctly used here. he has extra GPU performance that is being squeezed through the "bottleneck" that is the CPU, hence limiting FPS

If the game was not coded to take full advantage of all the cores a CPU has to offer wouldnt the CPU usage also be less than 100%. So basically if 2 cores where maxed out and 2 where not realy being used it would say 50%? I just tested and CPU usage was only showing 41% with GPUs both at 70% and still only 45FPS.

Just ran the windows performance monitor and it looks like during the time the FPS drop 2 cores are doing almost nothing at other times 4 cores are all even as far as usage and im showing 4 cores as "parked" would those be the hyperthred cores?

upgrading to SSD really only helps with load times. he has 8GB of memory, which is sufficient for all relavant game data to be read and stored in memory while the game runs, so the speed of his drive would only matter when he's loading a save or something

that's what i meant. the 3770 has 4 physical cores + hyperthreading. as most modern games only really take advantage of 4 cores, you would see 100% cpu usage on your 4 physical cores if you have a cpu bottleneck. if those 4 cores are not at 100% the problem is caused by something else.

if you read the second half of that post you quoted, 'bottleneck' implies there is an upgrade that will solve it, which with an i7... well where do you go from there? :p

OP, have you checked usage through afterburner? It may be a case of throttling?

My system is as follows. I7 3370k at 4.5ghz 1.29 vcore 8GB Corsair Vengence Ram at 1600mhz System drive is a corsair 128GB SSD with a 500GB storage drive (games are on the HDD for the most part) 2 SLI Gigabite GTX770 with 4GB VRAM factory OC to 1150mhz boost goes up to 1242 a MSI Z77A-GD65 Gaming motherboard and my PSU is a Corsair AX850.

I am getting the usage through MSI Afterburner's on screen display and then also looking at the graphs right after the bench ends. The boost clock of 1242 stays solid I would think if they where throttling the boost clock would be the first to go wouldn't it? Basically The cards are letting FPS drop as low as 43 while the usage numbers are showing 70% give or take a few points. Makes no sense to me as I would think that means they have the juice to push past 43FPS there but just arnt doing it. However my AVG FPS is on par with what most GTX770 SLI reviews are showing so im not sure what that says exactly.

They got 82FPS I get 86 but my cards have a factory OC so thats about right I wonder if the behavior Im getting is based on the benchmark or game?

Just out of interest what resolution are you playing at? Also do you have the 4gb versions of the card or the 2gb ones?

Edit : Have just looked at this review for metro :

http://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/metro_last_light_graphics_performance_review_benchmark,8.html

and it seems that vram regardless of resolution would not be a problem with those cards, although a surround setup would i'm sure eat into 2gb.

In relation to is the cpu bottlenecking the cards the same article mentions at 1920 x 1200 there is a possibility of a bottleneck on a titan, gtx 690 and amd 7990 due to incredibly similar fps. As your 770's are essentially improved 680's then the 690 is probably a decent point of reference.

index.php

The whole page where they speak of the possible bottleneck is here :

http://www.guru3d.com/index.php?ct=articles&action=file&id=4005

Again if you at the higher resolution then the results are completely different.

You may know all of this and it may be a waste of time, but if it isn't hope it helps. :D
