Smoke Comming From Card Reader

I plugged my USB card reader into a HP computer running Win XP. After saying it has to reboot to compleat the task. it rebooted. But then smoke was comming out of the reader and the case was hot to the touch. Now, surprize, the card reader is dead. What happen? And can I prevent this in the future?

Describe How exactly did you plug it in?

Most likely the card reader turned faulty upon the driver installation. Or it was installed in the wrong manner. Get one from a reputable manufacturer next time
