Hey guys, got an issue for you to look at.

I'm using an Asus ROG G73Sw as my primary computer, and about 98% of the time, I'm using it with headphones jacked in. I've been using it for over a year now after getting it from a refurbishing bench, without any issues, but just today, the audio system's started behaving oddly.

Generally, it does what it's supposed to. I plug in the headphones, the onboard speakers are muted, and the audio is routed through the headphones. But what it's started doing is deciding that the headphones aren't connected for between a half second and a minute at a time, during which it plays the audio through the onboard speakers. It always realizes that there are still headphones connected eventually, but it's a frustrating and distracting problem, particularly when gaming or listening to music.

My first instinct was that this is a problem with the jack, but the 'switch' has never coincided with a bump or jostle of the cable, and wiggling the cable around or turning it in the jack failed to reproduce the switch. I've also tried a number of different sets of headphones, and it happens with all of them. This has led me to believe that it's a software problem, but I couldn't for the life of me think of what could cause something like this.

Does anybody have any ideas as to what the problem might be? If not, has anyone else had a computer start ignoring headphones for several seconds at a time?

Not sure if it helps, but the driver software on this computer is Realtek HD Audio. If there's any other info you need, let me know.
