I have an Asus P5GD1 motherboard, with a SATA drive plugged into it, running Windows XP SP3. This computer should be able to run SATA drives using AHCI, according to Asus and Intel documents, but I can't get it to work.

My firmware, and Windows OS are all up-to-date. I downloaded Intel Application Accelerator, which is supposed to enable AHCI, from the ASUS support downloads for my specific motherboard. When I run it, it says my hardware isn't supported.

If I'm downloading software for my specific model, then should work. Nonetheless, I checked out the IAA documentation:

************************************************************
* 2. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
************************************************************

1. The system must contain an Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4
Processor and one of the following Intel products:

- Intel(R) 6300ESB I/O Controller Hub (ESB)
- Intel(R) 82801FR I/O Controller Hub (ICH6R)
- Intel(R) 82801ER I/O Controller Hub (ICH5R)

2. The system must be running on one of the following
operating systems:

- Microsoft* Windows* XP Professional or
Home Edition
- Microsoft* Windows* 2000
- Microsoft* Windows* Server 2003

3. The system should contain at least the minimum system
memory required by the operating system.

4. The 'Intel(R) Chipset Software Installation Utility'
must be installed prior to installing the Intel(R)
Application Accelerator.

OK so now the question is what kind of controller do I have. According to Asus, it should be the ICH6R ...

I ran Intel's chipset identification utility, which confirmed the manufacturer specs ...

Yet Windows Device Manager reports something completely different ...

... and Windows doesn't want to update the driver to anything else.

82801FB = ICH6
82801FBM = ICH6M which I think is mobile, but this is a desktop

Man this is so frustrating. How the heck am I supported to get this to work? I really want to be able to use NCQ.

use this link with the translator nad install the plug in ma config you will have the exact detatils of you system and it will also show you witch driver you could update http://www.touslesdrivers.com/ this site and link to driver are free .

Intel 82801FR I/O controller hub (ICH6R)
You can run a single drive with the SATA Controller set to RAID.

Intel Application Accelerator requires:
The system must contain the following Intel products:

* Intel(R) Pentium(R) III or Pentium(R) 4 processor
* Intel(R) 82801AA, 82801AB, 82801BA or 82801DB
controllers

I would set the SATA Controller to RAID and use:
Intel Matrix Storage Manager

Scout, the plugin instructed me to download the Intel Matrix Storage manager, which again told me that my computer didn't meet the requirements. I've been through this many times before.

This has nothing to do with cellphones. The RAID controller has an onboard SATA BOOTROM. Anyway, in RAID mode, the sytem just hangs on black screen, and HD isn't detected in BIOS. If I turn on the BOOTROM, I get a BSOD.

Drive is a ST380817AS.

Please see my original post. I'm interested in AHCI, not RAID. I was just trying Calvin's troubleshooting steps. According to this document by Intel, my chipset may not even support RAID anyway. It depends what I actually have.

Maybe I should look at the physical chips to see what drivers I actually need. They're hidden underneath Asus heat-sinks though. I think I/O controller is in the Southbridge right? I guess it's probably the one near all the SATA ports...

I decided to go for broke and reinstall. I slipstreamed the text-mode Intel ICH6 (R and M) drivers onto a new Windows install CD. Then I changed the SATA mode to AHCI in my BIOS and ran Windows setup. Setup recognised my hard drive and allowed me to install Windows, and it's now running in AHCI mode, so I guess that part is success. In device manager, the I/O controller my drive is on, is correctly identified ...

... but what the heck is 82801FB/FBM doing in there?? There's no such part in my system! And for that matter, why are there still IDE channels? It should all be in SATA mode now.

I'll try installing Intel Matrix Storage manager, and then move my HD around to different ports and see what it does ...

Well Windows seems to be pretty happy with the drive on any SATA port. The BIOS complains if it's not on a port labelled "Master" (SATA is not supposed to use the master/slave system), but you can bypass it with a key. Even my SATA optical works in AHCI mode, which surprised me. So, I guess I'm satisfied. I hope this helps somebody else. Bye for now.

You're right, I forgot there is an IDE slot.
For the third time, Scout, my BIOS is completely up-to-date. Rev 1014.

That means everything running smoothly now. Probably, the 82801FR is turned OFF when you disable AHCI in BIOS, therefore Windows is unable to detect it. In this case, the 82801FB takes over in IDE mode. This creates the problem of how do you install the driver for hardware which is turned off, and you can't boot Windows up when it's turned on. The utilities that Asus distributes won't take either.

Anyway, thanks all for listening.
