Dear Forumers,

Thank you for visiting this thread first of all. I have a problem that I am at my wits' end.

HHD:
WD Caviar Black 1TB FAEX SATA2 drive (OS drive)
WD Caviar Black 2TB FASS SATA2 drive (Problem drive)
OS: Win 7 x64 SP1

The problem drive was sometimes slow in reading the contents previously but writing is not a problem. However, 2 days ago, I discovered that the drive to froze while accessing some part of the contents. Attempts to read some other content on the drive was fine but closing it will have a delay. I presume some part of the drive is damaged and the rest aren't. I am still able to read the entire file structure on the HHD but if I access any problem parts, the HHD will freeze.

Scans using WD proprietory Diagnostic tools indicate a read element failure status 7. I understand the HHD failure is imminent but I have a problem with backup.

I am not able to transfer my files to another HHD in the computer because the file transfer will have 4 MB/s transfer rate and then it just froze. It seems my read head is gone (but the puzzling thing is I can still read the file structure and some of the files in the drive).

Attempts by chkdsk either in-Windows or in-DOS also froze after stage 3 checks. I am trying to avoid professional recovery services and RMA at the moment. I still have warranty but the data on it is far more valuable.

Thank you very much in advance for any possible solutions.

Sadly another user learn the importance of keeping valuable data stored in multiple locations.

I fear you may have to resort to data recovery places but tyou can try the freezer method to recover it. Simply place the drive in a ziplock bag ot two and stick in the freezer for quite a while, Then immediately install it and try to recover your data.
