please critique my build. i will be buying the parts this week and need advice.

budget $1150, after taxes

i will be purchasing everything from ncix in person

build link (pcpartpicker): http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/user/jcrescenzo/saved/1SAT

i would like a system that will enable me to:

1. play games at higher settings

2. give me the ability to edit videos and do some light photoshop work

i have the following questions:

1. based on my build, is the 650w psu overkill? should i go with a 500-599w psu instead and save some money?

2. what are your thoughts on the new gtx 760 card? i was thinking about getting the 7950 awhile back, but since the gtx 760 card seems to perform at the same level as the 7950, albeit at a lower price point, it makes sense for me to purchase the gtx 760. would you recommend that i purchase a gpu OTHER than the gtx 760?

3. a few months back, i was going to purchase the i5-3570k with a compatible mobo, but since the release of haswell, my mind has changed. should i stick with the haswell cpu and compatible mobo or go with ivy-bridge?

4. will this system build be sufficient for video editing applications?

5. should i increase the ram from 8gb to 16gb?

thanks.

Solution
I believe the GTX760 is holding the bang for your buck from nVidia and the 7970 from ATI.

Something like the Seasonic 520W would be good for this build, if you don't plan on adding additional cards, otherwise a TX750m or something from Corsair to keep it under a hundred.

Your motherboard choice is a popular one, can't really say anything against it, except maybe the color. A black(dark brown really) board from ASRock would make it blend in better with the case and match the video card more. MSI does make Black/Red boards but they are from their pricier line.

You will need a very good CPU cooler to go with a Haswell chip, they run very warm even at stock speeds under a heavy load. If you don't intend to overclock, drop down to the i5-4670 and an H87 or B85 board.

64GB SSD is a little cramped and not really worth the money $/GB. Bump it up to a 120GB or 128GB.

If you can afford the extra expense 16GB of ram will help with the video and photoshop editing and allow for more multitasking as you apply filters and such.

1. No, not at all. 650W should be perfect.
2. The 760 is good; however, if you can, wait until the 760Ti is released, which is at the same price point as the 7950, but should perform much better (almost at 7970 level).
3. Stick with IB. The performance increase to Haswell is not worth the price increase.
4. Yes. a 3570k is not optimal, but the next step up is another $100, and is unnecessary. This CPU will destroy almost anything you can throw at it.
5. No. 8GB is already kind of overkill, and 16GB is definitely overkill. I have 16GB RAM in my system, and I have not yet found a way to utilize it all in an efficient manner.
COMMENTS: In terms of the MoBo, just go Asrock Extreme4 and save $20 or so. Also, get something like a 500GB HDD, as it costs barely more and the extra space could come in quite handy.

I disagree. The purpose of a 64GB SSD is (mainly) to be the boot drive, and it does that very well. As we can see, OP has a separate HDD to store files and other things.
16GB RAM is complete overkill, unless you are someone who does this professionally. Even then, it could only be fully utilized in a system that is of a much higher caliber than this (using Workstation graphics, etc.).

Answers:

1. The 650w PSU may be a bit overkill, but of course that allows for more expansion. If you think you might be upgrading (Dual GPUs, higher TDP processor etc.) it would be better to keep it.
2. At that price point, not really. You could go a step up and get a GTX 770/ 7970 GHz Edition, which would give you better performance/ framerates in games, but of course that's a hundred dollars added.
3. The haswell is a 5-10% increase over the ivy bridge, but the processor and the motherboard are more expensive. Both will work fine, it just depends if you want slightly more power or a slightly lower price.
4. It will be sufficient for some video editing. For an added bonus, you could pick a 4770k/3770k and 16GB of RAM, but that again, is up to you. For light video editing, your setup is fine.
5. In games, it doesn't matter, you won't see much of a performance increase if at all. In video editing, maybe, but it depends on what you want.

Hope this helps! :D

Edit: I'm so slow, everyone beat me again :( Anyways, for the motherboard, I would recommend a Gigabyte UD3H. I have it, it's great! Also, I would get a 128GB SSD, I have a 64GB one in one computer and it constantly tells me it needs more space. For an SSD, I really recommend the Samsung 840 pro series. :D

1. Yes, this current build will run games on high settings, also are you planning to OC your CPU?

2. If you're going to editing videos and pictures, you can get an i7 to speed the renders up, also you're going to need more than 320GB of HDD and 64GB SSD for editing and games.

1. 500-599w is good because the reviews recommend that 500w is recommended for GTX 760's.

2. If you want, you can wait until they release the GTX 760ti 2GB which will probably cost around $300, but just a GTX 760 is very good.

3. I would say keep the i5-4670k and you can OC it to around 3.8ghz

4.Yes it will except the storage, you will need more.

5. 8GB is fine.

thanks for the replies.

i'm stuck again and need help quick as i need to purchase everything by 11 am. your help would be greatly appreciated.

current build: http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/user/jcrescenzo/saved/1SXc (made adjustments)

i want to spend more on the gpu, around $400 in total, what should i get? stick with the 760 OR go for a strong 7950 OR 7970 design? OR get something else?

i'm planning on oc'ing my gpu and cpu so please, no voltage locked gpu recommendations, thanks. i'm pretty sure gigabyte voltage locks all their cards.

please recommend a solid power supply that will be able to power my config with either a 760, 7950, or 7970. i don't want one that's going to explode on me, but let's keep it under $130.

finally, is the mobo that i picked overkill? could i just get something a bit cheaper? wouldn't mind saving some money, but i still want something that's decent.

On another note, is AMD still offering FREE games with the purchase of their gpu's? if so, i'd be more inclined to purchase an amd gpu.

thank you! i hope i get some replies quick here...
