I'm just completing my first computer build (with help from my son-in-law and daughter, who are quite knowledgeable about computers). I have the i7 4770K processor, the Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB HDD, the LG optical drive, the ASUS Z87-Plus motherboard, and a 700W Thermaltake Power Supply. I am running Windows 7 Professional. Everything runs perfectly when I'm using the on-board graphics with VGA.

Here is my problem: I purchased the MSI Nvidia GeForce GTX 660 Frozr III video card with 2GB of DDR5 RAM to replace the on-board graphics. When the graphics card is installed in the PCI-e slot (the yellow slot), I get only a blank screen on my monitor. This is true whether or not I use the DVI ports or the DVI port with the DVI/VGA adapter. I even get a blank screen when the card is just sitting in the slot without any cable attached to it (but with the VGA cable attached to the onboard port).

I chatted (online) with tech support at Micro Center (where I purchased everything) and the tech suggested it could be either a bad video card, or a bad PCI-e slot. Hoping that a different video card might solve the problem, I returned the MSI card to Micro Center and exchanged it for an EVGA Nvidia GeForce GTX 660, also with 2GB RAM. I installed the new card, with the same result. Desperate, I also tried inserting the video card in the second PCI-e slot (same result). I disabled the onboard graphics drivers and re-booted (same result).

I've researched the internet, but can't find a problem similar to mine. Does anyone have any insight into what might be the cause of this problem? Does it seem likely that the motherboard is defective?

Thanks very much for any suggestions you may offer.

I know this is a simple question, but is your monitor plugged into the wall?

OP said it works with neither slot; however, I'm not sure about onboard.

With only the onboard graphics (and no graphics card installed), I plug the monitor into the motherboard and everything works fine.

When I insert the video card into the PCI-e slot, I get a blank screen, whether or not I have the monitor plugged into the video card (DVI-D, DVI-I, VGA/DVI-I adapter, or the motherboard).

I have the monitor plugged into a power strip.

I switched the video to PCI-e as primary in the BIOS; it had no effect.

I'm having this same problem with the same motherboard however with a nvidia geforce gtx 650ti. After talking with asus and based on what they told me, if you've tried multiple cards and still aren't getting video it could be the motherboard's pci-express slot. I haven't gotten my RMA'd video card yet so I'm hoping we aren't suffering the same fate. lol

Thanks for your reply.

Update: After chatting with the tech at Micro Center again, he said that the only other thing (other than the motherboard) that he could think of was that perhaps my power supply was inadequate. I explained that I have a TR2 700W Thermaltake PS, and he agreed that it should be more than enough for the components I have (i7 4770K with the stock CPU fan, WD Caviar Black 1TB HDD, LG optical drive, memory card reader, and 16GB RAM). He recommended that I return the motherboard for a new one. I exchanged the motherboard for a new one (same model), and exchanged the EVGA video card for a new MSI GeForce GTX 660 Frozr III card (the same model as I had installed originally). When I re-installed everything, I got the same result as before--blank screen with the video card installed in the PCIE slot.

Since my monitor is older (a Samsung T220 LCD) was getting a message that the current driver was not compatible with the 64-Bit Windows Professional OS. I contacted Samsung and they gave me a link to an updated driver, which I installed, to no effect.

I had the same problem as you, except with ASUS Z87-A and GIGABYTE GTX 660.
I solved it by resetting the CMOS.

Hi,

1) Update UEFI to the latest version.

2) Ensure the GPU is getting power.

3) Some monitors do not feature auto switching of input ports. If you are using a different input on the monitor make sure it is set to the right input otherwise you won't get a display. You would not believe how many people get caught out by that one.

4) Try the GPU in a different PCIe slot.

5) Check the CPU socket for any bent pins.

Raja,

Thanks for your reply. I finally was able to get the video working. It did involve the monitor's input port, in that apparently, although the Samsung monitor has a DVI port, DVI is not supported. Once I plugged in the VGA cable to the monitor and the video card, everything worked.

Thanks to the Remote Go! feature of the ASUS motherboard, using my tablet for remote access, I discovered that the video card was outputting a video signal; so, I reasoned that if the signal wasn't being recognized by the monitor's DVI input port, it must, therefore be transmitting the signal through the VGA port. I switched the cables, and, voila!

Might be dumb to ask, but do you have the power cords to the Graphics Card connected properly? they have a wattage difference the 8 pin and the 6pin...

Might check your DVI cable also there are different connectors for DVI - single and dual, some monitors are picky about what they accept - see photo of different types here:
