1st Time Game Computer Build

Hi Tyro,
Just a few suggestions here,
Unless your Grandson is planning on overclocking, you can tone it down and get a non-overclockable CPU, and get a cheaper or stick with the stock CPU cooler.
If you are planning on upgrading in the future and you want to stick with Intel, make sure you get atleast Haswell (LGA 1550) and not Sandy Bridge/Ivy Bridge (LGA 1155). The LGA 1155 CPU's are already outdated and the motherboard you get for them wont be able to run LGA 1550 the MotherBoard socket that seems to be going to be good for a while. So a Haswell (Core i 4xxx series) will be needed if you want to upgrade in the future without changing the motherboard.
For a GPU, why not go with AMD. AMD have got the Never Settle program on, so you get...

Looks good. Although if you want to upgrade I would go with a Z87 motherboard and a i5 4670K.

Hey TyroGirl, you said you already have a PSU, but your pcpartpicker has a 650w PSU. You might want to remove that. :) Your GPU is 660, upgrade it to 760. :) And everything else is fine. Like robnof said, you can upgrade it to 4670k, but the 3570k is also good. But if the price diff is very close , get the 4670k one.

For a GPU, why not go with AMD. AMD have got the Never Settle program on, so you get 4-5 free games with the purchase of the GPU, games like Crysis 3, Tomb Raider, Bioshock, etc. So in the end, its more bang for your buck with an AMD GPU. A Radeon 7870 is the GTX 660 equilivent or as near as you can compare, but if you have some leftover go with a Radeon 7950.
16 GB of RAM is overkill. 8 GB is more then enough. I got 8 GB's and I've never in 8 months gone over 40% RAM usage.
Apart from that, maybe get a better Keyboard/Mouse kit, and perhaps Dual Monitors instead of one. Dual Monitors are a big step over a single monitor. :bounce:
Good Luck.

Double Post.

I went to PC parts picker and updated the cart you showed us.
http://pcpartpicker.com/p/1cpje
The monitors I've picked are full 1080p, so that the GPU can actually be used for what it was bought for.

The total cart comes to $1500, $160 over the original cart, but thats because of the extra monitor ($130).
You'll be getting a few games (80-100 dollars worth) with it though, so it offsets everything.
http://sites.amd.com/us/promo/never-settle/Pages/nsreloaded.aspx
You'll get FarCry3:BloodDragon, Bioshock Infinite, and Crysis 3 with this. You just need to register the card.
Hope that settles it.

P.S.
If I was building this for myself I'd just go with an AMD CPU. FX-6350 or FX-8320/8350. But thats just me :) :p

UPDATE --
Crysis 3 + Bioshock Infinite + FarCry3: BloodDragon comes to a total of $150. Compared all the prices with that of those on Newegg.
