Ok so just under a week ago I tried playing some games and after 5 or 10 minutes my screen turns black and I can hear the game for about 10 seconds then it just crashes. I know it is not an overheating issue and I have updated all of my drivers and I'm still getting no where.

I do not know if this is relevant to the problem but I first had this issue while playing Dragon age 2 and I read that playing in DirectX 9 will solve the problem of it crashing and it did. But now when I play other games it crashes.

Specs:
GPU - 7970 black edition
CPU - AMD FX 4100 quad core 3.6GHz
RAM - 8GB
DirectX - 11 (if relevant)

Solution
Update Direcx drivers. Also, do you have your ATI HD Audio driver installed? Personally i uninstalled my audio driver at my GPU (nVidia GTX 560 Ti) as it was crashing in many games. In fact, i uninstalled all GPU drivers i dont use (3D, automatic updates, etc).

It could also be ram related so run memtest just in case.

How do I update my directX drivers? Ive tried but it keeps saying the version I am using is up to date and there is no need of installation, perhaps I'm updating them from the wrong place or am trying to get a new version of directX instead of updating the drivers of the current version?

It says DirectX11 is the newest out there and when I check my system it says I have DirectX10 as its current version, but when I try too install X11 manually it says that I already have the newest version!

I also have the same problem, blackening screens ingame or total shutdown if laptops not in powermode.

I have not run into your DirectX problem before, thats so weird. Maybe try uninstall DirectX completely and try installing directX 11 again and hope it works.

As for the blackening screens, does it go black and then shut down/becomes unresponsive or does it flicker black while in game?

Yes,
Turns our it was the power supply not being able to keep up with the the GPU.
I guess it was faulty or just went bad.
I replaced the power supply with a new one and its been fine ever since.
