I want to make a Linux handheld capable of emulating up to GameCube and maybe PS2. I know it should be possible because of small devices like the Ouya and Raspberry Pi, along with things like the newer model smartphones. Would it be possible for me to do something like this? I'm thinking of taking something like the Ouya and replacing things, or just using a small motherboard and putting things like a screen on it.

for diy, a thin mini-itx board with a barebones all-in-one chasis and display may be the way to go.

there other similar to these.

those are too big to be handhelds. for handhelds, tablets, convertible hybrid laptops are the way to go. those aren't customizable though. ouya is not a handheld, neither is raskberry pi.

There are also those system on stick devices. ARM based Android devices that offer HDMI output, USB and bluetooth input, and WIFI. Basically a cell phone on a stick without a screen or cellular service.
