Hi everyone,

i just finished building an old pc for a friend of mine, with some components he already had and some i already had. Everything is installed and connected properly, but when i start the PC, you first hear all fans making a lot of noise and cooling, but after 2 or 3 seconds that stops and you hear the hard drive making noise. After that you hear a click, and then the systems shuts down. Is it possible that i need to reply apply thermal pasta? Or is er something wrong with the hard drive? I have two harddrives installed and when i disconnected one or another the same stilll happens. Also all power supply units are connected (double checked) including the 4 pins cpu power connecter.

Could someone please help me?

Solution
Hi
Yeah could be a hard disk problem or a corrupted file on windows which could also point to the drive.
It may be worth formatting a hard disk on another PC then putting it into this computer and then loading windows onto it.
You could also fit that disk into another computer as a second drive and scan it for errors.

It is a 300 Watt power supply. I thought that it would make it, because the computer has only a Pentium D 830 and a GeForce 210 with 2 HDD and 1 DVD Drive. Is it too few, the power? If yes, in a week or two i'm getting a 750 Watt Power supply for my own pc and i can put my current 450 Watt in that one, might that be an idea?

Nope, that is not the problem. I tried it with a 450 Watt Power Supply just now, and still the same problem occurs. I also gave the cpu some thermal pasta, but still, no success...

Hi
Is it possible to try a different graphics card in it ?
A long shot but disconnect the optical drive to eliminate it as a problem.
Disconnect everything plugged into it except the keyboard and the monitor.
If it still occurs then it must be a motherboard problem.
Check no cpu pins are bent, remove all ram sticks except one.If there is a little chipset fan on your motherboard make sure it is turning.

By removing the ram and deconnecting everything that is not necessary to boot the system i think i got a new hint. Now, i can see the boot menu and when i select the OS i want to boot, it askes whether i want to boot it in save mode or regular. Unfortunately, i'm unable to pick one, as the keyboard doesn't work in that specific menu. Now, it counts itself from 25 to 0 untill he will boot windows itself. As soon as the timer reaches 0, the PC stops working. I suspect that it is an Hard Disk error, is that possible?

And again, nope, that is not the problem, tested it with 2 different HDD's and still the problem occurs. I'm running out of clues.... Could it be a Motherboard problem? That the motherboard turns the PC of due to a Motherboard error, i know for sure yet that it is not the Powersupply and not the Hard disk

Try a different stick of ram in it,move the ram to a different socket, try a different graphics card.
If none of these then it must be the motherboard.
A long shot but is that the original cpu for the board,if not it may need a bios update.
