I changed the hd after getting the 301 smartdrive warning on my DV6 pavilion and still get the mesage on boot up and during operation. It pass all disk diags and shows no sign of defect. what is really going on here, I get that message as soon as power is applied to the unit so i know it doesnt have time to do a test, it is reading a previous status..pls help

Solution
If you want to disable S.M.A.R.T function, than go to your BIOS and disable S.M.A.R.T, you will not get another error message.

NOTE: Disabling S.M.A.R.T feature is not the smartest things to do.

Thanks much for that info..I realize that killing alarms isn't the smartest thing to do, but other than a controller fault (that no diag or performance has revealed) how do you get rid of the start up notification, I am still thinking it is reading a previous status bit somewhere when it did have a prob. And yes, the hard drive I took out was definitely bad.

Yes this is a previous status. Sometimes updating the BIOS firmware can erase this status, but sometimes its a permanent fixture to the boot process. Sometimes there are logs you can view / clear in the BIOS. I guess the idea behind this is to warn potential buyers the computer has had issues in the past.
