Defective avg message

Hello, we have used free anitvirus from avg. Had removed it, but we continue to get this annoying message accross the screen that product is defective and needs to be reloaded. Have done so.
Tried multiple removals, no luck. Message continues to choke our system,

Does it appear at start up? if so, when on your home screen press the windows key and R (at the same time) then type 'msconfig' into the text box, after that hit enter. You then see several different tabs, click the 'startup' tab, after that you will see all the programs that load up on start up. If AVG is still there then un-tick it.

I hope this helps. I remember my cousin had a similar problem with some video capture software and he did the process I have just explained above and the messages and random pop-ups were no more.
