best 120mm closed water cooler?

In all honesty, there isn't really a best. For all of them, the performance differences are going to be within the margin of error. The setups with push/pull may be slightly better, but negligibly so.
As you said, either go with high-level air cooling, or a 240mm rad water cooler.

The Corsair H80i or the Antec Kuhler 920 (the latter of which I have). They both have especially thick radiators, meaning that (with effective fans), they can dissipate more heat. However, I can tell you (from experience) that, especially with two fans, these things are enormous.

That is one of the lowest-level liquid-cooling solutions that there is. Please don't get one of these. If you need a 120mm rad, at least get a thicker one that has some semblance of a chance of beating out an upper-level air cooler...
