Hi all -- I recently used an iMac to partition and reformat a WD HDD to be half OS Extended and half exFAT, so I can use the exFAT half on my pc laptop.

I'm running XP x86 SP3 and have installed the KB955704 file from Microsoft.

My pc now knows a drive is connected, but won't show me the exFAT partition. The only drive visible from My Computer is the WD install, which is obviously useless.

I can't reformat until I get back to this iMac because I have quite a bit of photography on the exFAT partition.

Are there any solutions I might have missed? Thanks!

Solution
yes win 7 & 8 natively support exfat
vista needs SP1 (or higher) installed and xp needs SP2 or higher to gain exfat support.

so windows support is a little more common than you thought?

exfat works fine. you just need to format the drive from a windows machine with the mbr partition format. If your mac is runing 10.6.5 or newer then it can read and write to exfat so theres no need for the osx partition.

Fat/fat32 should also work for both systems

I don't believe XP recognizes exfat, period. We get a lot of XP computers through our shop, almost always running SP3, and never has a single one been able to read exfat. I have a special NTFS installation and utilities drive I have to use for XP jobs.
