So my computer is a dell xps 8300, although I have changed the graphics card (radeon 6950) and with that I had to upgrade the power supply, the next upgrade i'm looking at is a new case. But I have read that dell and other companies make the motherboard so it only fits in their case, I don't know if this is true but I just need some guidance as to if i need to upgrade my motherboard as well, soon enough i plan on upgrading to an i7 soon after the new case and adding an ssd with the case, so I suppose I just need to know if I need to upgrade my motherboard with the case or if I just should and suggestions to what motherboard or case I should get, I generally game on my pc just to let you know. I believe the current case for this computer is a mid-tower and I would be upgrading to a full tower.

More often then not for the larger desktops they use off the shelf components. It will likely fit fine in a new case.

Though Dell, even XPS (basically Dell branded Alienware without the tweaking and overclocking), doesn't use very high quality motherboards, usually 50 or 60C electrolytic capacitors which age faster then ceramic or tantalum caps.

I believe the XPS8300 is an i7-3770, so a decent H77 board from ASRock, ASUS, Gigabyte or MSI would be a good upgrade if you want to go that route.
