I currently have in my machine an ATI 4870hd 1gb card and in my dads machine at work he has a fire pro v7800 2gb. He doesn't do any sort of graphic design so he is glad to give it to me. I want to know which one is better for gaming. I know workstation cards don't perform nearly as well as gaming cards but considering the v7800 is two years newer and has a $700 price difference I thought maybe it's enough to push it over the edge. Here are my current specs but I'm building a new rig soon with 8gb and an fx-8350. The fire pro probably won't even fit in my current case.

System Specs:
-core 2 quad q9550
-4gb(2 x 2) ddr3 1066mhz
-win 7 ultimate 64 bit
-2 7200rpm hdd

The HD 4870 has 800 stream processor and the v7800 has 1440. The newer architecture is also performance boost. Also the v7800 has almost double the memory bandwidth. The only problem is drivers. I am not quite sure how the drivers for the V7000 series handle games. Just theoretically speaking the v7800 has almost twice the flops of the HD 4870 but that does not necessary translate into double the frame rates. I am expecting that the v7800 will preform better, but also compatibility issues might arise. Searched the internet but didn't find enough information to make a definite conclusion. Sorry, but you have to be our guinea pig. :na:

I will test it out then, my only fear is bottlenecking and the 4870 has more shaders, I guess I will just have to see. I'll post my opinion of how they compare if I can get it to fit in my case. Thanks for the input, much appreciated.

the 4870 performed about 25% better in black ops 2 and a couple other games.
