Dsl vs cable woes

First off let me say I am new to these forums so sorry if I posted in the wrong place or format.

Second let me just say I am a noob when it comes to network. when it works I smile and when it doesn't I cry

Now with saying that I feel I have exhausted my options an I am sure I will leave out a detail or two but here it goes:

a week or two ago we switched from dsl to cable. the installer came and the internet worked fine on his laptop so I told him just plug into our router when he was done.

MY wife and I each have a computer on the network my computer ran on the new network just fine. the new modem/router was plugged in by my computer so I bypassed out router and hooked straight into the modem. my wife's computer would not connect to the internet on the new network. hooked her back onto dsl and worked just fine. plug her back into the cable ...dead. Well we ended up ordering her a nic 10/100/1000 card. when it arrived no difference. I tried reinstalling her drivers then operating system in case it was software. we tried various cmd prompts and control panel settings (too many to list). everything seems to be in order and the hardware seems to be working. I can't understand why dsl would work and cable not when the cable is working. Speaking of cables I tried changing the cables to her computer too even though they work as the dsl shows.

I can't at this point seeing it being anything but the motherboard. I don't really want to replace but if it fixes the problem then that is what I'll do. also as an aside I noticed our netgear n300 wireless router would not connect my computer through to the internet the othernight. we don't really need the router just find it odd how out of 2 computers and 1 router only 1 computer works fine on the new network

any thoughts? and thank you for any help in advance

1 thing that I just thought of that I forgot to include was when she tries to connect to the cable internet in control panel the network changes to public and there is no option to change that. when she connects to dsl it stays public but the option to change it to the home network appears and can switch it

The bold part is the problem. Your PC is hijacking the connection.

ISP -> modem -> router -> devices
Your PC, being between the modem and router, is scarfing the public IP address.
When you connect the wife's PC to DSL, it works because that account has not yet been deactivated.

Connect as shown above, and all will work.

Guaranteed it's a configuration setting on the one that doesn't work. Start by posting the output from "ipconfig /all" on both machines while both are connected to the router. While you're at it check 'Internet Options' on the machine that isn't working and make sure that there are no proxies configured.

if your modem only has one port, then of course noone else can get on the internet that's connected to the router... you need to configure the router for the new cable connection, as it's still setup for your DSL connection which is different

you need to know the IP address of the router - can find you instructions if you give me the model of the router

Apparently I was not that clear in my post. The new modem has a built in router with 4 ports in the rear. I plugged my computer directly into one of these ports and plugged her computer directly into another one of these ports. our router has not been use on either the dsl or the cable, even now when she is on dsl she is plugged striaght into that modem. was playing around the other night and noticed I could not get internet to my computer if router through the other router and thought it was worth mentioning. when playing with the cable modem both computers are plugged straight to the modem with no other router than what is in the modem. Sorry for the confusion

ok - even though your new modem has a built in router, you still want to use your old router.
modem port 1 to old router WAN port
router ports 1, 2 to computers

if modem ip is 10.1.10.1 then assign router ip to 10.1.10.2
configure both computers to 10.1.10.10 and 10.1.10.11
configure router wireless to DHCP

------ update
i was writing my post when you posted the ipconfig info
the Katie computer's ip is a loopback - update the network driver or disable the device in device manager and then enable it and see if it gets an ip from the router
or try the other network jack

i can disable and reenable. I am not sure what you mean by a loopback or which other network jack you mean

I'm going to assume that you followed instructions and had both computers connected to the cable modem/router when you ran those ipconfigs.

Let's look at them.

using your old router will give you a second layer of firewall security- if that matters

the Katie computer has 2 ethernet jacks on the motherboard - the one that is connected with a cable is driven by a Realtek, and the other is an Nvidia nforce controller

Dingo, the reason there is 2 nics is one of the things we tried in trying to fix this problem was replace the one on the mb with a pci-e one thinking there might be wrong with it. there is only a cable into one controller. everything said the mb one was working but it was a cheap experiment to try and fix the issue

Ex-bubblehead, I did connect both computers to the cable modem when I did the config's. I am sorry if this is simple but I really don't know how to fix the DHCP issue that you describe.

----googling now :)

the only way to really figure this out is to log into your modem and look at the settings- it's extremely hard for us to give you direction without even knowing what equipment it is

I suggest you call your service provider and have them walk you through getting into the modem and making sure the settings are correct - the technician that installed the modem should've checked to make sure service was working on ever computer in the house attached to the modem

Thank you Dingo, I should have contacted tech support sooner most of the time I find it to be a waste of time. I just got off the phone with tech support and learned some stuff that helped out. apparently the router that came with the modem was disabled as we didn't pay for their wireless service as we had a wireless router so only one port on the back is functioning. Our router is configured for dsl but for some reason can't access the settings when I use the username and password. so could go and pick up a new router and should fix the problem. I will hook her computer directly to the #1 port to confirm it works there . also the modem is a cisco dpc3825 and I thought I put the router in the first post which is a netgear n300.

That is bizarre. I've never of any ISP doing that.
They provide you an IP address. What happens inside your network is your business (within reason).

well the modem that came with our new connection we are renting from them, so it is their property. apparently they give you a modem without the wireless router built in if you don't subscribe to their wireless service. they were out of the other routers so they gave us this one and disabled the router portion. would have been nice to know.

However I have hooked my wifes computer striaght to the #1 port on the modem and still can't get hers working at this point

Thanks to all who took some time to help with this issue it is appreciated

John, on your wife's computer, have you tried using the PCI network card to get internet?
Control Panel/Network Connections/double click the adapter that the wire is plugged into/click properties/then select TCP/IPv4 and click Properties
then you should be at the [General] tab that shows 2 radio buttons for Obtain an IP address automatically or Use the following IP address / and the same below that for DNS server address
make sure both are Obtain automatically
then click Advanced... and goto the [WINS] tab and make sure there's a check in the box next to Enable LMHOSTS lookup, and Default NetBIOS setting
ok all the way back out and reboot
does that solve the problem?

dingo07

You still have not answered my question John... Have you plugged the Ethernet cable into the pci network card, and does it work? If it doesn't work, remove the card.
Download the latest network card drivers for the onboard controller - get them from the motherboard manufacturer.
Then- boot into safe mode
In Device Manager/ Network interface- right mouse-click the Realtek and Uninstall, removing all drivers if it asks
Then reboot into windows and install the latest driver

You shouldn't have to configure any settings and it should either work or not

Couple questions and I think we can get you squared away.

First a little info about cable modems, it should only have ONE Ethernet port on it, if this is correct anytime you change what is plugged into that Ethernet port, say from one computer to another, or from a computer to a router, you MUST POWER CYCLE THE MODEM AND WAIT UNTIL ITS ONLINE LIGHT IS SOLID BEFORE YOU POWER UP THE NEW DEVICE. The truth is some routers do not care if its locked online and some do, waiting just excludes this issue if yours is a picky router.

Now, the router does the router have an ETHERNET input or a PHONE line input port? If this is a dsl modem and router all in one, you cannot use it as a ROUTER for cable. You must go buy a router that accepts Ethernet as the input.
