Depends on game. You probably could get 60FPS on some games but something like battlefield 3 you would have to get a pretty powerful card to max it out.

Depending on your game, it can vary widely. Say Skyrim or BF3, you won't be able to max it out, however, you'll be able to run it on medium most likely quite well. Minecraft although will be able to run maxed out on the gtx 660. So basically, depending on the gaming dimensions that are presented to you, the various types of gaming qualities will be differentiated through your gaming.

It also depends on the resolution, if you play on 1080p monitor then you need a more powerful card. But if you play on 1366x768 or 720p display then GTX 660 is totally enough to get 60FPS on most games maxed out.

FPS varies on a few factors.

1. Resolution, the higher the resolution, the higher of a toll it will take on your graphics card and CPU.
2. The game you are playing. You will not max out Crysis 3 at 1080p. You will however max out Skyrim at 1080p.
3. How much memory is installed onto your system. If you only have 1GB of RAM which is of course unethical if you want to play games today, it will perform much worse compared to the same system with for example 8GB of RAM.

Essentially in conclusion, if you have a decent amount of memory, you will be able to max most games out a 60FPS. Not at 1080p but if you play your games at 720p or 1280x720 you will be able to max most games out at 60FPS. I hope this answers your question.

also if you approach 250 for the 660 remember the gtx 760 also the tahiti LE chips are sometimes around that 660 price and will outperform also.

Just stick with GTX 660. 760 is a bit overkill for your monitor and setup.

I get 60+FPS on BF3 with the GTX 660 2gb SC. I play on Ultra preset on 1920x1200 so people that say that it won't run ultra.. you're wrong. This is a great graphics card and I will use it for BF4 and most likely will run BF4 on high with 60+FPS

Yup you can get 60FPS on BF3 Ultra in 1080p monitor as long as you don't get crazy on MSAA.

what about on 720P with a maxed MSAA? will i still be able to get 60 fps? i want vsync on because for me, everything above 60fps is not noticeable compared to 60fps

OK in 720p you can max out all the game you want even with MSAA 60FPS for sure, now go buy GTX 660 and enjoy.

bf3 came out in october 2011. this is 2013 and the games that have came out in these last two years are a little more intense.
the OP said all games not games made in 2011. you have metro, grid2, tomb raider, online hawken, farcry3, bioshock. these would be interesting to see at max settings what you are getting since i do not get 60+ fps with a amd tahiti chip.

the minimum specs for bf3 are
Radeon 3870 or higher, Nvidia GeForce 8800 GT or higher.
recommended:
Nvidia GeForce GTX 560 or ATI Radeon 6950. 1 gig.

this game is not a benchmark game hell it recommends a core 2 quad and a gtx 560 for max settings

i do not know but i would have to imagine the move to 720P would allow him to play some of these newer games but i do not know as i have not seen in any reviews or plugged in my old gtx 560 to see what would happpen.

i do indeed play at 720p. my main concern is to be able to play all games, i mean all, inculuding the upcoming games, at 60fps in max settings. i am not so rich, i want my GPU to last for the next 2-3 yrs before i replace it that's why im asking for a little overkill GPU. i know that future proofing is a myth but i just want to have a good lasting GPU that will serve me will for 2 years

It depends on the resolution and what you consider "maxed out." Technically, a true max out of a game in terms of settings must include maxed antialiasing. Even at low antialiasing, you will not achieve 60FPS for the more demanding games on the market at 1920x1080. A few of these games include Metro 2033 & Last Light, Tomb Raider, Crysis 3, Need for Speed Most Wanted, Far Cry 3, Hitman Absolution, Max Payne 3, Assassin's Creed 3, etc. Even with two GTX 660s, you would still not max a game like Metro Last Light with SSAAx4. In fact, you would need more than four, which is not even possible. My dual GTX Titans barely break 60FPS at SSAAx4 on Metro Last Light with Advanced PhysX and everything else turned up at 1920x1080. Don't pay too much attention to benchmarks, as they often have settings such as Advanced PhysX or Tessellation turned off or very low and they do not take note of this (Linus Tech Tips is infamous for this, never take their benchmarks seriously).

I would recommend a GTX 760 if you're looking for a cheap, but relatively powerful GPU. It's only $250 and you'll get almost as much horsepower as 2 GTX Titans if you grab four of them and throw them in quad SLI. The obvious differences would be power consumption, less vram, less memory bandwidth, etc.

at that resolution, most games yes, but still not all games. In nearly any game on any setup there will be times where fps will dip below 60fps, weather its the cpu, gpu or game engine causing it.

You already got the answer, lot's of people already said it already including me that on a 720p monitor, you can max out most games at 60FPS.

sorry for any miscommunication upgradder011 i knoww you can get those numbers with your card as it is above reccomended specs. I do not even know if your card was out then it may have still been the gtx560 back then.

I was just hoping you could run some current games like metro or sleeping dogs. even tomb raider, bioshock, or farcry would be nice @ 720P max setting just to see if this card will really work for him.

I have Metro Last Light with around 60FPS maxed out with a i5 3570K and the GTX 660. The GTX 660 came out before Metro Last Light. If you want me to test bioshock (I will not buy it though) I can. I will try to find a demo of it otherwise I will get the full game.
