I recently purchased a corsair h80 and i have installed it to my mobo no problem but what i don't seem to understand is my temperature readings. i can idle at crazy low but when i put a load on it doesn't seem to do all that great. my temps jump wildly 15-20c every second or two, when heating up then just stays ridiculously hot despite having the fans on maximum.( 5.25 fan controller) the water in the cooling system doesn't seem to be heating up with the CPU at all. i can put my hand on the air after 20 mins of prime95 and it still feels cool. The pump works as indicated by my motherboard fan header because that's what comes out of the pump rpm not fan (i don't have them connected to the unit on the cpu module.) I have new thermal paste on (arctic silver) and i know how to apply it properly so that's not the issue i just cant figure it out. or is there even a problem at all?

gigabyte 78lmt-usb3 mobo
amd fx 6100 @ 4.5ghz (1.275VCore 1.455V as indicated in bios)
16gb Crucial ballistix
GTX 460 1GB V2
600W Diablo-Tek ATX PSU

Solution
Hello, 75 degrees C is not very hot, especially since you have a 95W Bulldozer proc. Higher TDP usually equates to higher temps. You have an overclock of 4.5 Ghz which is substantial so 75 C is pretty commendable. Bottom point, I wouldn't worry about it.

But if you insist, you can do these things:

Remount it and use Arctic Silver 5
Check your case air flow
Check your voltages - see if you can lower them slightly

34c Idle 75c load

speeedfan coretemp and cpucool.

also the cooler is mounted very tightly to the board it doesnt jiggle or have any gaps on it smooth paste applied.

Well those temps aren't terrible... I get about those temps at idle and mine is running an Antec Kuhler 920, which is actually a bit better than the H80 (thicker radiator).

Ok i thought that it was getting too hot yes i will try to lower the voltage i should have remembered that. when i saw 75c i thjought it was getting toooo hot. waht is the most i should let the temp get to? in your opinion? i dont want the lifespan to be too short but i know if thats an issue i should have underclocked it a bit

Modern CPUs are designed to shut down immediately if they reach a certain temperatures that is too hot (TJ Max). In this case, 105 C is that TJ Max. If you consistently push your temps that high, then yes it will cause damage to your CPU. Otherwise, I wouldn't go anywhere over 81 C personally. Preferably 65-75 under load sounds good to me with an overclock. 75 C is fine. Anything over 81 is just bad. Try those steps that I asked you to do so that you're not jumping to underclock your CPU yet. If you can' lower temperatures, then you should lower clock. Do any of those steps first before you attempt to touch the clocks. Alternatively, if you play on higher resolutions (1080p and higher), you could OC your GPU as well to get that extra oomph. Just try things out and see how it goes. Hope this helps!
