Current PSU on an old motherboard?

I have a PSU which I think has gone bad. My computer randomly shuts off and, after cleaning my entire computer, there has been a constant clicking noise which I think might be the PSU (I'll backup the HDD just in case).

Will a current PSU fit in an AMD 2+ motherboard (AMD Phenom and DDR2)? I noticed that my current PSU leaves 4 open pin slots on the motherboard connection, so I am wondering if this is part of the problem. Will a newer PSU fit this connection?

Any recommendations for a cheap PSU? I was looking at a Corsair GS500 for about $42, but this is probably overkill (I don't have a big graphics card or anything) so if there is anything cheaper you'd recommend, let me know.

Thanks.

The PSU is the heart of your system, without it NOTHING works! It is the only component that can destroy ALL of your other parts if it goes bad. Don't skimp on the PSU,  it is false economy! :bounce:

Well the computer is pretty crappy, but I see your point. I can go with the GS500, but I just want to make sure it works with an old board. I can't seem to find any conclusive answer on this.
