Hello.

How compares TN vs IPS monitors for gaming in price price range of 100-300 USD? I.e., input lag, smoothness of movement, etc..

Also, will there be noticeable difference with 60 vs 120 Hz monitors, if game runs at <60 fps and I don't use 3d mode?

Solution
Sorry, i miss-read. at less than 60, no it will not be noticeable.

The input lag can depend on the monitors controller and is independent of the screen it self.

This is why many TV sets have more input lag. they have filtering to make the image look better and it adds maybe 1/2 to 1 second of delay.

Some review sites take measurements of this kind of thing. They do it by comparing to a CRT screen with a timer running.

IPS glow is a off angle effect that makes dark colors look like the image above(many call it a backlight issue, but it is not from the...
TN screens tend to be faster at a cost of color accuracy and viewing angles(view from the side/above/below).

IPS panels are FAR better for color and viewing angles at a cost of overall speed.

60 to 120 is noticeable to most gamers for sure(even without 3D). I personally have mid way point(S-PVA) screen with rather good color(better IMO than many i see today) and mid level response(for a screen that is 5 years old). Next to a TN it looks better but has more input lag for sure(some users will not notice it while others may go nuts).

I always recommend looking at the screens in store to see what YOU like since specs only go so far.

Another thing you may wish to look for is IPS glow as some users do not get bugged by it, but it drives me nuts.

This IPS screen at MAX brightness(dynamic contrast was OFF) was not only darker(It had a "game mode" that fixed the darkness but made everything all banded.) than my other screen at 23%, but had some bad glow. Again, many users do not notice or are nto bugged by this.

S-PVA next to IPS(not a real cheap, but not the most expensive one)

This does NOT mean IPS is bad(quality screens with a polarizer have NO glow.). I have seen some good cheap IPS screens with way less glow from LG.

I agree. IPS definitely looks better than TN. I have two monitors, one of each kind and I can definitely tell my IPS one looks better. Personally, I have not noticed any sort of input lag (the IPS is 6ms while the TN is 2ms) on the IPS model. But of course that is just me. The best thing for you to do is to go into the store (I walked into my local Fry's and Best Buy) and just look at the monitors and play around with them. I should caution you that the people working there probably won't be of any help since they're generally not trained in specifics like that.

Also, another thing to consider is what type of screen you'd like to have. Generally glossy screens have better color than those that aren't, but obviously are reflective so if that bothers you its better to not get one or plan on playing in a darkened environment (I know HP makes monitors with glossy screens).

fudoka711, I could not believe how good my old HP glossy screen looked back in the day(8 years back on a laptop). It was only a TN, but looked very good. At the time I was only using CRT and when I got an LCD it was such a let down(I had to bring my laptop to the store to try screens. I figured that by this point, all LCD screens would be good).

Yes Staples has let me do this multiple times(bring a laptop to check out screens with color patterns and look for banding and other issues like poor contrast).

Will TN vs IPS speed difference be noticeable to average user when playing games? Keep in mind, I'm not pro gamer ;)

Will IPS monitor with 5ms GTG be slower than TN monitor with 5ms GTG?

Does that 5ms (or other number) is the same as input lag, or monitor can have lower delat (i.e. 5ms instead of 8) but have higher input lag?

So, 60 vs 120 will be noticeable even when FPS is below 60?

About looking at screens in store - I did it, that's why I became curious about IPS monitors, but I doubt stores will let me try playing games on different monitors, to see smoothness, input lag, etc - that's why all the questions here . ;)

What IS an IPS glow? Is it reflections on the screen?

IPS glow is a off angle effect that makes dark colors look like the image above(many call it a backlight issue, but it is not from the backlight and more from cost cutting[some of these also reduce power consumption] measures on many screens.). On that screen it was even visible in a lit room and from straight on

Some videos of IPS glow.

Again, some users are not bothered and not all screens look as bad as some videos(in fact I think both those are better than the one I had).
