custom install of windows 7 question

does custom installing delete all files on all partitions or only the partition i choose to install windows in? just yes or no
also, is it the same to install it without booting up from dvd.. by clicking setup.exe

No and No for Vista going forward (you didn't say what Windows it is). IF there is a install on the computer already it depends what version is on the computer is what the new install will do, depending how you start it.

So if you have Windows 7 on a computer already, and insert the CD and run setup, that will tell you it will install ANOTHER copy of W7 and make the current on Windows.old. Problem is it doesn't help clear old programs and files which can come back to you later. If you boot from DVD it will again say that it is going to save your old Windows and so on.

If you had Win8 on the computer and popped in W7, it would refuse to do anything because your 'alreaded upgraded'.

Your simpliest solution, take external drive...

Your simpliest solution, take external drive, attach it. Copy all files (not programs) to the drive then run a WIPE program / CD to wipe the drive clean. Boot from Windows DVD and enjoy the lenghty clean install (last check I did after SP1 was already 200patches alone for Windows).
