have a look in your task manager to see the status of your RAM. Are they all the same brand?

the 2 2 gb ram sticks are the same but still even with 4gb shouldnt it recongise it as 4gb ?
the 2 1gb sticks are a different brand

You should take out the 2 1GB's memory chips. You shouldnt mix and match different brand RAM.

System overhead and shared DRAM to video is going to take up some - can you post what it shows in system information - right click on my computer and then click on properties

Yes the problem was you had two different brand RAM chipsets in your system. The reason why it wont say 4GB exactly when you took the x2 1GB sticks out is because some of that RAM is dedicated to the OS (Kernal memory) which cant be intervened via program applications. Plus more of that memory will be being used when virtual doing nothing.

This is a screeenshot of my RAM status in task manager. (Sorry you may have to zoom in.)
