VRM Heatsink for MSI 970A-G43

Solution
Honestly I would just save the money and not OC on this board. I'd say you could hit 3.8 without issues but that's not really much of a gain and wouldn't be worth the effort of an aftermarket cooler and heatsinks for the VRM's. the 965 is still a good chip but it needs a good board to reach its max potential which is 4.0-4.4 Ghz.

Not to burst your bubble but I have found that even with aftermarket cooling the MSI 970 boards have VRM heat issues when overclocking. They save money in a very crucial area by utilizing cheap VRM's and I found out with a 970a-G46 (version that has heatsink) and a fan positioned above that heatsink I still had heat issues. So much actually at 1.4 vcore the VRM's were bleeding so much heat into the socket it was causing the cpu to over heat. That being said using those heat sinks and a fan will allow you to overclock a bit I'm just saying don't expect any miracles. Good luck man

Ahh alright, is there even a point in wasting $10-15 plus shipping for heatsinks for a small OC? I wanted to OC from 3.4ghz to 4.0ghz but that's probably too much, would 3.8ghz be good, how much of a speed difference is that and is it worth the spending for vrms? I might just not OC at all, put the stock cooler in there and then use the Hyper 212 for my gaming PC.

I have the same board and my FX-6300 is stock locked and clocked at the turbo core speed of 4.1ghz, no heat problems.

I am going to purchase this mofset heatsink http://www.thermalright.com/products/?act=data&id=168&cat_id=10

and then try for a stable overclock to 4.5ghz with a Hyper evo 212 fan and heatsink on the processor.

I am worried about heat only slightly, as even with the stock cooler and two asus r9 270's in a relatively small case I have no heat issues whatsoever.

AT full load CPU and Graphics cards I am averaging 56c on the cpu, and 50-60c on the graphics cards clocked in at 1ghz respectively.

I think the 970 has been a great board for me. 7900+ score on firestrike. Run my Kingston Predator ram at 1866.... so far so good.

Might go up in smoke when i try this overclock but meh, the computer is getting old anyways... if it works great, if it pops... time for a proper gaming mobo and a better chip.
